A mural in the tomb of Queen Nefertari (1290-1254 BC) wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II, Ramesses the Great, from the 19th Dynasty. The tomb is in the Valley of the Queens and following its discovery in 1904 it was dubbed the Sistine Chapel of Ancient Egypt because of its lavish murals. The scene depicts Nefertari playing the ancient board game Senet. The origins of the game can be traced back to the third millennium BC making it arguably humanity's oldest board game. As well as being a recreational pastime for two players, Senet was associated with religious ritual notably the passage into the after-life. Boards were often placed in tombs and it is referenced in the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead. Some scholars have suggested that Senet is an evolutionary forebear of chess although another school of thought claims backgammon is its closest relative.
The set shown here was recovered from the tomb of Pharaoh Amenhotep III (1391-1354 BC) and is on display in the Brooklyn Museum, New York.
You can try your hand at playing Senet online courtesy of the British Museum.
