Brazil

Brazil's railways had a lot of British input particularly in the early years of development and many locos were supplied in that period.

Manning, Wardle of Leeds supplied the 0-4-0ST, shown top, which was plinthed at at the CSN Capivari power station located on the metre gauge EF Dona Teresa Cristina in Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil. History of this loco is unclear, one version says it dates from 1871, another from 1921! The EFDTC became a must visit in the 1970s for its all steam roster including the very impressive 2-10-4s which hauled big coal trains from the mines to the power station and Imbituba Docks. With British capital the railway started in the 1880s with much smaller power, eight 2-6-0T from Hunslet, Leeds and Nasmyth, Wilson of Manchester.

The Manning, Wardle 0-6-0ST, below, was one of two at Imbituba Docks which originally worked in England on the Davington Light Railway, a military line. Both were out of use in 1973.

On the right is one of two Beyer Peacock 2-6-2T at Imbituba Docks, ex main line locos. One was in use in 1973 with an auxiliary tender.

Left above is an ancient Sharp, Stewart 0-6-0ST of 1867 at Campinas. It is broad gauge, that is 5'3'', same as Ireland, and is probably ex San Paulo Railway, with one being shown as extant in a preserved locos listing.

Left below is a relatively modern, built 1946, North British 0-6-0 rack tank ex Leopoldina Railway, metre gauge. After main line service, it saw use at a cement factory, though not as a rack fitted loco. Sadly it was missing its chimney when seen in 1984. Above is a nice old Beyer Peacock 4-6-0 which worked on the metre gauge Compagnia Mogiania railway, seen in a park at Campinas.

This Kerr Stuart 0-4-2T of 1911 at Usina Serra Grande sugar factory in Pernambuco State was being overhauled in November 1986.

It was a great pleasure to see this fine, well kept Sharp Stewart 4-4-0 of 1892 at Usina Sao Jose sugar mill in the Campos area in November 1986, used for yard work. Originally built for the Mogiana Railway, the loco was sold to the mill in 1917.

17 is one of twenty 0-4-0 brake locos built by Kerr Stuart and Robert Stephenson between 1900 and 1931. They were used on the cable worked inclines of the broad gauge E F Santos-Jundiai - formerly the Sao Paulo Railway - and lasted in service until the early 1980s. Quite a number were subsequently preserved.

Kerr Stuart 0-4-0ST 1015 of 1907, 2 foot gauge, was in the museum at Paranapiacaba at the top of the aforementioned inclines. It was used to shunt coal for the locos here and at Campo Limpo near Sao Paulo until the 1940s when fuel oil replaced coal for EFSJ locos.

The museum at Paranapiacaba also housed Sharp Stewart 4-4-0T 15 which had worked on the Sao Paulo Railway. It was one of three dating from 1861 and was still in steam in early 1954 for the 400th anniversary celebrations of the city of Sao Paulo.
