Your Appointment

Your initial consultation will last approximately 45 minutes. You will have the opportunity to discuss in detail with Dr Haque your current allergy complaint and your previous allergy history. If required, you will then undergo allergy skin prick testing. This involves placing solutions of allergy-causing substances (allergens) that are relevant to your complaint onto your forearm, followed by a pin prick through the drop into the top layer of your skin. After 10 - 15 minutes, the results are observed. An itchy red bump at the site of the pin prick indicates the possibility that you might be allergic to that substance.

It is important that you do not take antihistamines for at least 2 days (preferably 4 days) prior to the appointment. Antihistamines can affect the result of the test. We stock a wide range of skin test solutions including many pollens, dust, moulds, animals and foods (nuts, fish, shellfish, egg, milk, wheat, soya, meats). If you think you may be allergic to fruits or vegetables, please bring fresh samples with you to your appointment for testing on the day.

Depending on the nature of your allergy problem, you may also require lung function testing (spirometry) and blood testing, all of which can be performed at your appointment.
