Message from RAFOM President Stan Karson:
On June 11, 2013 RAFOM had another successful Annual Meeting, our 14th, at Top of the Town. For those of you who were able to attend, I trust you enjoyed the evening, including the speaker, Rachel Smolkin - Deputy Managing Editor of POLITICO, the refreshments and the spectacular view. If you were not able to be there, you deserve a summary of the event.
We heard welcome remarks from Walter Tejada, Arlington County Board Chairman, Colonel Fern Sumpter, Commander of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall and Michael McMenamin, president of the Arlington County Civic Federation. Walter Tejada's message was in a letter to me which I read, since the County Board was meeting Tuesday night, and he could not be present at our meeting. He praised RAFOM for its record of advocacy for its residents and the diversity of our area. Other guests included Delegate Bob Brink, Clerk of the Court Paul Ferguson, Police Chief Scott, Captain Andy Penn with two officers from the Second District Police and Captain Jose Ortiz with three members of Fire Station 10.
Accorded RAFOM's deep appreciation were the Byrnes, Top of the Town owners, for continuing to make the unique venue available to us, and Patrick Morrogh of The Quarterdeck restaurant, who once again helped out immeasurably by providing the drinks, soft and otherwise.
Rachel Smolkin delivered an informative talk about Washington politics and issues, including her coverage of the White House and Congress. Her answers to the many questions from the audience were quite responsive, even with a touch of humor. Many members told me later that she was another first rate Annual Meeting speaker.
Bob Blakeman, who chaired the Nominating Committee, provided his Committee report on nominations for RAFOM officers and Board members for 2013-15. After opening up the floor for other nominations and hearing none, the following were elected: Stan Karson, President; Patricia Darneille, Vice President; Kenneth Robinson, Secretary; David Treworgy, Treasurer and Board Members Leslie Arminski, Steve Campbell, Stuart Stein and Jim Villars.
Our heartfelt thanks go to those who helped make the event another success story. First and foremost, RAFOM Vice President Patricia Darneille did prodigious work again by obtaining the food and overseeing the setting up and decorating of the room, among many other details she took care of. She was helped by all RAFOM Board members listed above as well as by RAFOM members Barbara Wilson, Steve Campbell's wife Nicole, Larry Reed and Steve Maroon. Finally, our thanks go too to our accomplished volunteer pianist, Milton Nelson, who once again entertained us throughout the evening, and we were pleased to welcome his wife Mae as well. RAFOM will hold its next regular meeting in September 2013. We hope you spend a very enjoyable summer.
