Both Alester Althor and Rodrick Starrheart were born to royalty in what was then known as the Wildlands. Thorogrim and Illustar were two of the very few kingdoms to ever survive the ravages of the Wildlands, or the secret plots of the Old Kingdom. The primary reason for their survival was the alliance that the kingdoms had maintained since shortly after they formed.
Alester and Rodrick were taught from the time they were born to be critically thinking, and that it was important to remain friendly with their neighbor. Neither kingdom ever achieved any kind of real power however. Partially this was because of the harsh lands they were in, and partially because the Old Kingdom made it a point to make sure that no kingdoms on the other side of the wall ever became strong enough to challenge them.
The two kingdoms worked hard to maintain order and safety in their realms, and when The First arrived, Alester and Rodrick were quick to join the rebellion against the Old Kingdom. For their efforts in the War of Chaos, they were named as two of the Ten Kings of Men. Since then, their kingdoms have expanded and flourished. They also remain as the voices of reason and cooperation at the High Kings Councils.
