Y’Sann and the Sky Riders

To understand the Sky Riders you must first understand Y’Sann and his origins.

Y’Sann was the first to have the gift of Horse Speech and was cast out from his original tribe. When he left the tribe half the tribe went with him. Those who followed Y’Sann including the best riders and the shaman's apprentice went with him. Y’Sann was drawn west to the Grass Sea, the plains of Aressia. Those who followed Y’Sann were the first to use the phrase gentle a horse. After a decade in the Grass Sea their numbers tripled.

Y'sann was a well respected War Leader of the Ironborn that had the Chief's ear. He was a brilliant tactician and always had minimal losses.

From Y’Sann and his Horse Speech came the Sky Riders.

The Sky Riders were those who formed magical bonds with Pegasus.

The Sky Riders had humble origins, rooted in an honest friendship. Y'Sann met Skywing at a secluded lake and they formed a true friendship with him over the years. Skywing was an elder of the Pegasus and even after there long years together they never could sort out who was more surprised that they were able to speak with one another through Y’Sann’s gift.

Through Y’sann’s gift they shared conversation and learned from one another. One day during one of their talks they were attacked by a dozen men. Y'Sann being the great warrior that he is was holding his own. However Y’Sann started to falter, it was the numbers, and when he began to falter Skywing told him to climb on. When Y’Sann did Skywing took flight and returned Y’Sann back to his tribe.

That was the first flight of the Sky Riders, humble in origins but pure in essence one friend protecting another.

A deeper magical bond formed between the pair, the first bond. This bond started in friendship would lead to something greater forming.

Over time others showed the gift of horse speech bonded with the Sky Horses creating the Sky Riders. These gifted individuals were leaders, chieftains, mediators, provided guidance and counsel, and were fierce warriors.

Y'Sann was revered as a near god that is when the people who followed him started referring to themselves as the Y'Sanni. The forming of the Sky Riders cemented the Y'Sanni use of the bow. They were known for their Sky Volley – which was said to blot out the sun.

The Sky Riders and the Sky Volley are why Tristan targeted the Pegasus.

The sigil of the Sky Riders was a blue Sky Horse on a white field. The Sky Riders would also get a tattoo of their Sky Horse and it was tattooed with the birth blood of a mare.

The bond with the Pegasi extended the life of the Skyriders and they developed a resistance to magic. Sky Riders die in the sky and have a sense of when their time is coming so that they can go out for their final flight. The Sky Horse usually passes from grief soon after their rider’s final flight. Sky Riders are laid to rest in the Sky Mound which is the highest hill in the Grass Sea which has an apple tree on it – located in the western part of the plains.

It was the Sky Riders that inspired the Dragon Riders.
