Ironborn

The Ironborn were humans that can trace their origins to Harrenhall. They were fierce warriors and were broken only by a god during the Age of Chaos. They are most known for skill on the battlefield, their courage, and their mental and physical strength. They valued honesty and hygiene. In all of those ways they are like the Warlords of the Freelands, however the Ironborn valued the range of emotions and emphasized the bonds of family and tribe.

The structure of Ironborn was fairly straightforward. The Ironborn had Chieftains, War Masters, and War Leaders.

War Masters were the individuals who trained the young warriors and are considered to have mastered war. Ironborn War Leaders were those who commanded on the battlefield, the kingdom equivalent would be generals. If needed there were Party Leaders who would lead a group or squad, but that was often not needed and was determined by who had skill for the task at hand and changed when needed and was not an ongoing rank.

Where Warlords give blades at very young ages the Ironborn presented blades only when a War Master deemed a warrior was ready and they looked beyond skill to make that determination.

While their skill in battle is what they are most known for, the Ironborn had a reach and deep culture. They had arts that included poetry, music, sculpting, drawing, painting, statues, intricate stone carvings, leather work, their armor and weapons were also treated as art.

Additionally the Ironborn had three languages. They have a written language and spoken languages are different. They also had the language of crafting. The language of crafting is what sent the Ironborn apart as craftsmen, but the language of crafting must be used carefully because the word used is not a representation of the thing it is the thing.

The language of crafting is also the language of magic and was taught to the Ironborn by a group of elves who lived very remotely in the mountains. This is the language that allows mages to communicate their intentions to the weave but it is deeper than what most mages use to cast spells. The language is where the term spellcraft comes from, and why magic is referred to as a craft. The crafting language is not taught to every mage because it must be given precise perimeters and the mage using it must clearly picture their intentions within their mind. Any error when speaking something in the language of crafting can cause major consequences and ripples. A mage also must know the energy cost of what they wish to craft using this language and if they have the energy reserves to cover it.

The Ironborn were broken only during the Age of Chaos and the war with Tristan. Since that time they have been considered lost by many, their histories something to learn from. However they are awakening.

The Ironborn are not a race or offshoot of humans, it is not about bloodlines and ancestry. It is a way of life, a philosophy, and ideology. Those with ancestral ties are more likely to rejoin the tribes as they reforge themselves, but people without ancestral Ironborn blood can embrace their way of life and become Ironborn.

The now awoken Ironborn are gathering in the area around Deephold and reforming the clans. The Y'Sanni people who are the foundation of the Horse Clan remain the plains of Arressia. As the other clans gather and reform they will choose chieftains. Historically each Clan was composed of multiple tribes, however there is a restructuring occurring in which it will just be clans. It remains to be seen what lands they will settle and if the Y’Sanni will remain in Arressia apart from the others.
