The Companions:
In the 16th year in the Age of Man five strangers Duvall a cleric of Eternus, Illyana a feisty ranger, Shaia a paladin of Bahamut, the silver dragon Skylance, and Sid a bard would drawn together by events and through their exploits they would come to be known as the Fearless Five, a name they hated.
The historians and lore keepers were remiss in their duties and waited many centuries to record this tale, so much was lost. The lore keepers reached out to Illyana to clarify some of the details and she threatened to use them as first flight bait for the young rocs. The lore keepers being the wise individuals they are fled for their lives, because it was unclear and remains unclear on if that was a joke or not. Thankfully the historians were able to reach Shaia and Skylance who explained that Skylance was the fifth campanion. They would not discuss events further and so the historians left before they pushed too far and over stayed their welcome.
What historians and lore keepers have been able to piece together is that this is when when Illyana bonded with a roc and the Winged Riders were formed. What inspired her to stare down a roc in the wild the world may never, but having been a victim of her glare we understand why she wasn’t eaten. There are rumors and tales that when the Winged Riders first formed the rocs would only bond with elves, but that changed. Our source reported that the rocs refused to bond with others because their magic was limited and so the lifespan of their chosen rider was not extended like with Dragon Riders, the source was not sure what changed, but lore keepers are willing to bet that Illyana just glared at the rocs until they and the magic responsible for the bonding made the right decision. Timelines on how long that stare took are unknown since it’s rampant speculation.
It was also during the adventures of the Fearless Five that the legendary Eternus Incident transpired.
Through a series of events in which the Fearless Five ended up in the heart of the Underdark, where Eternus had his good cleric fuck around and find out. That’s how those closest to Shaia tell the tale. The church of Eternus holds that Duvall was struck by divine inspiration. Who is to say which side is accurate. Duvall threw a divine relic into the air and there was a ball of light over Menzoberranzan. Details get hazy there, but it is known that these events did significant damage to the residents of Menzoberranzan. You would think that would be a good thing. Do not tell Shaia that. Duvall’s actions led to Damien coming to the surface, in Portsmouth if the historians and lore keepers have translated the relics of the bygone era accurately. The where is less important than what transpired. When Damien came to the surface as the result of Duvall’s actions in Underdark, Shaia was killed defending the people. Her death came in the center of a massive spell form the clerics of Eternus had put into place. Her death while in the spell form at the hands of Damien while he was on the surface allowed Eternus to bind him to the Underdark permanently. There is some scribble here that translates to either utter fucking bullshit or something about divine law that allowed Eternus to bind Damien in this manner.
Through a unicorn ring that she was gifted Shaia made a full recovery from death, but she never forgave Eternus or Duvall for what is now known as the Eternus incident.
Shaia started the campaign as a half-elf and through a series of events she was turned to dragonkin. Historians and lore keepers recovered what seems to be a crude joke about her taking an entire dragon in, that appears to be in response to when she absorbed the soul of a dragon. Skylance and Shaia found love and marriage. They settled over Portsmouth and had two children.
Illyana found herself with a mountain of responsibility running the Aerie over Portsmouth and commanding the Winged Riders. Illyana rarely involved herself in kingdom matters or petty squabbles, however when there is a significant threat the Winged Riders will respond.
The historians and Lore Keepers found mentions that Sid went off to try and make heavy metal a thing, no one is sure if that took off or not. The historians and Lore Keepers couldn't recall hearing this style of music in their travels, but it is not their area of expertise. Whatever he went off to do, there are some bards, historians, and lore keepers who say he missed the opportunity of a lifetime not cashing in of the tales of the Fearless Five. The historians and lore keepers might be salty because if he had written even a single note musical or otherwise their job would have been easier.
Duvall went on to do well in the church of Eternus, and that kept him busy enough that he didn’t have time to reminiscence with anyone about their adventures. Though the church made sure that any matters requiring his attention were away from Portsmouth.
