[Sep 2020]: PDI Lab has been awarded an Innovate UK grant under their scheme UK-China: Precision For Enhancing Agricultural Productivity.
The project is with Ant Data Ltd on the topic of Farmer-centred Interoperable Mobile-Cloud System: Integrating Data from Farming Activities and Environmental Information for Sustainable Fertiliser Management. The project summary follows: Sustainable fertiliser management and reducing farming emissions have become a high-priority agriculture issue in China. The Chinese government has commenced strong support for innovating novel Internet of Things (IoT) enabled smart farming technologies to enhance productivity and reduce emissions. However, due to low education level and geographic dispersion of farmers, practical effectiveness and economic benefits of these technologies are too low. This project will aim at providing a comprehensive holistic approach to dealing with sustainable fertiliser management by enhancing the deployment and use of farmer-centred interoperable mobile-cloud systems that offers access, collection, aggregation and analysis of farm data. This collaboration between Ant Data Ltd, Velcourt and Sheffield University in the UK and CAS and Jiangxi Tian-Ren Ltd in China will stimulate growth of the UK and Chinese market, provide safer working conditions, creating job opportunities and allowing local growers to receive a greater return for their produce.
The grant is £669k (of which £165k to Sheffield) and Dr Po Yang is the technical director of the project.
