This course will study American Sign Language, the native language of the American Deaf Community. The WCCUSD Course Outline for American Sign Language, the National Curriculum Guidelines and Standards from Gallaudet University, the World Language Content Standards for California Public Schools, the Common Core Standards (CCSS), as well as an emphasis on improving literacy, will guide the focus of this class. Each lecture, assignment, activity, and project will be developed in an effort to help students learn to use receptive and expressive ASL skills to develop fluency. Students will develop cultural sensitivity and awareness of appropriate behaviors and attitudes within the target culture and develop a respect for the American Deaf Community as a linguistic and cultural minority.
