An article in the Globe and Mail (from Canada) on May 21st 1983 "English pubs invaded by North American game" describes how a pub quiz league in Canada was set up by an English expat and was initially popular in English pubs. The headline is a tenuous reference to trivial pursuit which was very popular at the time.
I met somebody at a wedding this summer who is a brewer in Bourdeaux and the beer is mainly sold in an English pub there, with a very popular (and by all accounts lively!) quiz night.
The quizquizquiz blog also mentions quizzes at a number of locations around the world including the philippines.
