My All-Time Red Sox roster project is:
75.0% completed
6/27/20 - Ben Taylor made 14 relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2017, earning himself a single save and a 5.19 ERA. He now pitches in the Cleveland organization.
I picked up 3 different Tzu-Wei Lin's over the last year including a Topps certified card as a card show door prize.
6/26/20 - I was able to pick up 2018 World Series MVP Steve Pearce shortly after the big victory in 2018 and am finally getting around to adding it on here. In that series, Pearce batted .333 with 3 home runs, 8 RBIs, and an insane 1.667 OPS.
Sam Travis was a highly touted infield prospect for the Sox that appeared in games from 2017 through 2019. He was never able to stay in the lineup for long, and thus did not make much of an impact. I was able to pick up a signature on his 1st Bowman card from SportsCollectors. Adding this signature to the site puts me back up over 75%!
6/25/20 - Long time with no update, but I finally received a new Sox signature via eBay - that of relief pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez. Although he went winless in 2019, he also averaged 16.9 strikeouts per 9 innings. I was able to pick up a Topps Chrome signature for just over $2.
5/2/20 - More from my December COMC.com purchase. Mike Shawaryn pitched in 14 games for the Sox in 2019 with a pretty poor 9.74 ERA. At the same time, he had a strikeout per 9 ratio of 12.8.
4/29/20 - A while back I picked up what was becoming a white-whale of the 2010's. Steve Selsky, who played only 8 games for the Sox in 2017 and had a paltry .111 batting average has eluded me for years. Listings never came up on eBay. I was able to snag one back in February, though I payed slightly more than I had hoped for a player of his caliber.
4/25/20 - Some recent eBay pickups to share
First is a Michael Chavis signed card from 2020 Donruss. Although a sticker auto, I like the look of it. Chavis had a decent rookie campaign for the Sox in 2019, hitting 18 homers and knocking in 58. His average was a bit low at .254 and his on base percentage of .322 could use some work. Right now he's slated to be the Sox second baseman of the future.
Jack Tobin put together a very good 13 year career, finishing with two average years in Boston in 1926 and 1927. For his career he hit .309 (.297 in Boston), and three times collected over 200 hits.
Bernie Friberg played only 17 games in a Boston uniform back in 1933, but hit a solid .317 with an impressive .404 OBP. I picked this up in an eBay lot.
Mike Palm pitched in 3 games for the 1948 Red Sox, meeting little to no success. His ERA was 6.00 in 3 innings pitched with a WHIP of 3.667. He is a more difficult signature to find. Being able to track this signature down completes the 1948 Roster for me, which is the earliest compeleted roster to date. It is my 64th team roster completed!
4/14/20 - Some more updates today
First is relief pitcher Bobby Poyner, whom I picked up with an SCN purchase. Over parts of two seasons he's maintained an average 4.50 ERA.
In the same purchase I also picked up a signed card of part time reliever and starter Hector Velazquez who has been with the club since 2017. Over that time he's won 11 games for the big club with a 3.90 ERA.
3/26/20 - Today's update is from a purchase made on SCN a while back. I was able to pick up a signed Pawtucket Red Sox card of relief pitcher Trevor Kelley. He did not fair well in Boston in 2019, losing 3 games with an 8.64 ERA.
3/23/20 - Considering he was traded to the Cubs today, I am adding Travis Lakins to my 2019 roster. This was part of a December COMC purchase. A relief pitcher in 16 games, Lakins did alright with a 3.86 ERA. He did not have a win nor a save.
3/22/20 - I got one former Sox in the mail this week. Former catcher Rick Cerone signed 1 Red Sox card for me. This card is from the 88 Traded set, and was one I had never seen before.
3/19/20 - Today's udpate is a pickup from the 2018 Red Sox Wives Food drive that I've never entered. I was able to pick up a Raffy Devers signed 4x6. He had an awesome season last year, hitting .311 with 32 homers and 115 RBI.
3/18/20 - Picked this up early in January from a member on Sportscollectors.net. It is a minor league card Ryan Brasier, prior to his time on the Red Sox. Brasier was dynamite out of the Sox bullpen in 2018, and was poised to take the closer role in 2019, but met with much difficulty. Glad to add another 2018 member to the collection.
In an effort to continue to work on updating my 2019 Roster, here is a signed card of Andrew Cashner who was picked up from Baltimore at the midway part of the season. He was pretty bad here in Boston, sporting a 6.20 ERA. I was able to pick up this autograph/jersey card from COMC for less than $2.
2/11/20 - Pickup from last year
I was able to trade for a signed cut of current White Sox star and one time Red Sox prospect Yoan Moncada. He didn't make much of an impact with the Red Sox in 2016, hitting only .211. He had a breakout year with the White Sox last year, hitting .315 with 25 homers and 79 RBI.
I was able to pick up Andrew Benintendi from the Red Sox Wives Food Drive in 2018, and am finally adding him on here. He completes the 2016 Roster for me. Benintendi has had a decent 4 year stint with the Red Sox, but will always be remembered for his game saving catch in Game 4 of the 2018 ALCS.
1/5/20 - Pulled on in last week
Pinky Woods - I was able to grab a signed index card of the 43-45 Red Sox pitcher from eBay. Mr. Woods belongs to the collection of "war time" players who saw their MLB careers extend only during the war years, when many regular ballplayers were serving in the military. Pinky Woods had a mediocre 3 seasons on the Sox, maintaining a 3.97 ERA and a 13-21 record.
12/3/19 - Two updates today - One new player to the collection and another adding additional scans
JD Martinez - I was able to pick up a certified card of JD on eBay for a decent price (under $20). I would love to find one eventually of him in a Red Sox uniform but this will do. He's been an absolute masher for the club over the last two seasons including leading the AL in RBIs in 2018. He hit 3 home runs with 14 RBIs in the 2018 postseason.
Peter Hoy was a pitcher for the Red Sox for all of 5 games in a forgettable 1992 season, amassing 3 2/3 innings pitched. He signed three cards for me â„… St. Lawrence University where he works as the head baseball coach.
12/2/19 - After nearly two years away, I am back and updating. I am first working on my 2018 & 2019 Roster updates. I have about 300 new items to add to the site, so it will take me some time. If you've been following my collection, check back often for new updates.
2/2/18 - I've finally hit 75% of the all-time Red Sox roster. I've added two new signatures that brings me just over that milestone.
Fred Haney - I purchased a signed GPC of Haney, who played with the Red Sox in 1926 & 1927. He hit .232 in his 587 at bats, adding 3 triples and 19 doubles. Haney is best remembered as the manager of the 1957 World Series Champion Milwaukee Braves.
Paul Lehner - I purchased a GPC from the same collection of Lehner, who played only 3 games for the Red Sox in 1952. In those three games he went 2 for 3, putting his career Red Sox batting average at an interesting .667.
1/28/18 - Major update today. I recently had a fairly large purchase come in via an autograph collecting Facebook group. I was able to add 14 new Red Sox autographs into my collection, putting on the precipice of 75% at 74.97%. By my calculations one more signature will put me at 75% of the all-time Red Sox roster!
Al Baker - Al Baker was a pitcher on the 1938 Red Sox, who saw only light action with minimal success. He appeared in only 3 games in relief, managing a 9.39 ERA without a decision. Mr. Baker passed away in 1982.
Ray Dobens - Dobens pitched 11 games for the Red Sox in 1929, primarily out of the bullpen, though he did record two starts. He received no decisions, but did maintain a decent 3.81 ERA. Mr. Dobens passed away in 1980.
Bob Barrett - Barrett played in 68 games as a member of the 1929 Red Sox. He hit fairly consistently (.270) over that time, but had very minimal power. Prior to his season in Boston, Barrett played for the Chicago Cubs (1923-1925) and Brooklyn Dodgers (1925 & 1927). Mr. Barrett passed away in 1982.
Ted Olson - Olson pitched 18 games for the Red Sox over three seasons, from 1936 through 1938. Born in Quincy, MA, Olson had a mediocre career with his hometown team, sporting a 7.18 ERA in his time at Fenway. Mr. Olson passed away in 1980.
Ed Gallagher - Gallagher pitched for the Red Sox in 1932 with less than stellar results. A Dorchester native, the Sox signed Gallagher out of Boston College. In 1932, Gallagher's ERA was 12.55, with a WHIP of 2.451. Much of this stemmed from the fact that he had difficulty finding the strike zone. He averaged almost 5 walks per strikeout. Mr. Gallagher passed away on Cape Cod in 1981.
Bill Rodgers - "Wild" Bill Rodgers played for the 1915 World Series Champion Red Sox, albeit briefly. He played in 11 games, with 6 at bats, never collecting a hit. He was also a long time manager, who managed the Peoria Red Wings of the AAGPBL (All-American Girls Professional Baseball League) in 1946. Mr. Rodgers passed away in 1978.
Allen Russell - Russell played four seasons with the Red Sox from 1919-1922, amassing 27 victories and 24 complete games. When baseball outlawed the spitball in 1920, Russell was one of 17 pitchers exempt from the rule change. He appeared in the 1924 World Series with the Senators, appearing in one game. Mr. Russell passed away in 1978.
Alex Ferguson - Ferguson pitched for the Red Sox for 4 seasons, from 1922 to 1925. During that time he won 32 games, completing 36. Ferguson was a member of the 1925 Senators, appearing in two World Series games that year, winning one. Mr. Ferguson passed away in 1976.
Joe Lucey - Joe Lucey played in only 13 games for the 1925 Red Sox, collecting 2 hits for a measly .133 average. He also played 3 games for the 1920 Yankees. Mr. Lucey passed away in 1980.
John Heving - Heving played for the Red Sox for six seasons in the 1920's and early 30's. He hit fairly well with the Sox (.268), but demonstrated no power, as he his 0 home runs in those six seasons. He was a member of the 1931 American League Champion Philadelphia A's, appearing in one World Series game. Mr. Heving passed away in 1968.
Rip Russell - Russell was a member of the Red Sox in 1946 and 1947. The Sox seemingly acquired Russell for the stretch drive in '46. He did provide some power (6 home runs), and played solid defense at first base. Mr. Russell passed away in 1976.
Moose Solters - Solters played for the Sox in 1934 and 1935. The highlight of his Red Sox career was hitting for the cycle on August 19, 1934. Here is the box score. Mr. Solters passed away in 1975.
Greg Mulleavy - Mulleavy, who played one game with the Red Sox in 1933, was a long time member of the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers organization, working as a minor league manager, major league coach, and scout. Mr. Mulleavy passed away in 1980.
Jack Rothrock - Rothrock played for the Red Sox from 1925 to 1932, before being dealt to the White Sox. He hit .300 for the 1929 Red Sox, but is probably best remembered as a member of the 1934 Cardinals "Gas House Gang." Mr. Rothrock passsed away in 1980.
1/23/18 - One ebay purchase in today. I added former Sox firstbaseman "Tioga George" Burns. On the club for the 1922 and 1923 seasons, Burns hit .317 with an .882 OPS. He also turned an unassisted triple play for the Red Sox in 1923, and had the first ever hit at old Yankee Stadium. A former teammate of Ty Cobb, Burns is best remembered as the 1926 MVP when he collected 216 base hits, set a then record for doubles with 64, and hit .358. At the time of his retirement, Burns was had the third most hits as an American League right handed hitter.
1/21/18 - One back this week - Hall of Famer Jim Rice sent be two signed items in approximately a week with donation.
1/4/18 - Doing some New Years updates. Recently I picked up a signed GPC of Tommy O'Brien. O'Brien was purchased from the Cardinals for the 1949 pennant drive. Although he hit only .224 in '49, he did provide a little pop, hitting 3 homers, 5 doubles, and knocking in 10 runs in his 49 games. A disappointing start to the 1950 season prompted him being traded to the Senators along with Merle Combs for Clyde Vollmer.
10/21/17 - A few excellent signatures in this week: Bob Porterfield, Mario Guerrero, & Julio Valdez
Bob Porterfield - In 1953 he led the American League in victories with 22, while also maintaining a 3.35 ERA. He was also an AL All-Star the next season. After years of trying to track down a Porterfield signature at a good price, I am finally able to knock him off my list. In doing so, I have completed the 1956, 1957, and 1958 rosters.
Mario Guerrero - An infielder, Guerrero never made a splash in the Boston Red Sox, hitting .241 with 0 home runs over 2 partial seasons. Right before the 1975 season began, the Sox shipped Guerrero to the Cardinals for a player to be named later. The Cardinals complete the trade 3 months later by sending solid reliever Jim Willoughby to the Sox. I purchased this 1974 Topps of Guerrero from a group on Facebook. Guerrero is impossible TTM.
Julio Valdez hit a combined .207 in 65 games over parts of four seasons for the Red Sox from 1980 through 1983. He is best remembered for being arrested in the Red Sox dugout by Boston Police during a game in 1983. Following the incident, he was designated for assignment. Valdez can only be had via consignment or private signing. This was given to me as a gift by an individual who held a recent signing with Valdez.
9/2/17 - Two TTM successes from former Red Sox this week.
Mike Benjamin - The former reserve infielder who played on the Sox in 1997 and 1998 signed 4 cards for me. His best season came in 1998 when he played in 124 games, hitting .272. He filled in for an injured Nomar Garciaparra for much of May.
Roberto Petagine - A former outfielder, Petagine signed both cards I sent. He appeared in 18 games for the Red Sox in 2005, hitting .218 with 1 home run and 9 runs batted in.
8/29/17
Adam LaRoche - The big first baseman, best known for his days as a Brave and White Sox, signed one card in a little under two months. He was acquired via trade in 2008, and lasted 6 games with the organization before being re-traded.
8/13/17 - Vacation updates #2. Some TTM, a purchase, and two from the Red Sox Wives food drive.
Sparky Lyle - Best known as a Yankee closer, Lyle took home the 1976 American League Cy Young Award. Prior to his Yankee days, he was also a very solid relief pitcher for the Red Sox from 1967 to 1971 before being dealt for Danny Cater. He had a 2.85 career ERA in Boston, and was a member of the 1967 Impossible Dream team. He signed two cards c/o with his signing fee of $5.
Craig Kimbrel - The winning pitcher of the 2017 All Star Game has been absolutely lights out this season for the Sox. At the time of this update, Kimbrel has 28 saves, a 1.48 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, and 16.6 K/9, truly an unbelievable season. I had a friend pick up a 4x6 signed by Kimbrel at the annual Red Sox Wives Can & Cash Drive to help the Greater Boston Food Bank. It's the first Kimbrel in my collection. In most seasons, I'd say Kimbrel has an outside shot at the Cy Young Award... except for the next guy...
Chris Sale - Another grab from the Food Drive, Chris Sale will be the 2017 American League Cy Young winner. He currently leads in every important pitching category (Wins, ERA, Strikeouts, ERA+, Innings Pitched, K/9, and K/BB). It's been awesome watching him pitch for the Sox all season, and he goes against the Yankees tonight!
Marty McHale - A native of Stoneham, MA, McHale pitched on some early Red Sox teams including the 1916 World Series Champions. He was a decidedly mediocre pitcher for the Red Sox, combining to go 0-3 with an ERA of 5.90. I picked up a signed Government Postcard on eBay to add to my collection.
8/12/17
Getting back from vacation I had a number of former and current Red Sox waiting for me. Some are new, others are simply additions to my collection.
Mike Timlin - A solid reliever for two World Championship teams in Boston, Timlin signed 2 cards for me in the mail. The 2001 Topps is actually the first non-Red Sox card I have of Timlin in my collection.
Billy Wagner - Wagner was a late-season acquisition for the Sox during the 2009 stretch run. He actually pitched pretty well for the Red Sox, but helped the Angels start a rally in that year's division series Game 3 that allowed the Sox to be swept. He had a borderline Hall of Fame career previous to Boston, pitching for Houston and Philadelphia. He signed 3 cards for me TTM.
Danny Darwin - After leading the National League in ERA in 1990, the Red Sox signed Darwin as a free agent. Darwin was a mediocre pitching while in Boston, though he did spin a one-hitter against the White Sox in 1993 at Fenway Park. Darwin started the first Red Sox game I ever attended. He signed 5 cards for me c/o his minor league team.
Butch Hobson - The Sox former thirdbaseman and manager signed two cards for me c/o the minor league team he manages. Hobson once hit 30 home runs in a season (1977), and added 28 more in 1979. Hobson was part of the Carney Lansford trade with the Angels in 1980.
Andy Kosco - Mr. Kosco played in only 17 games for the Red Sox in 1972 before being traded to the Reds. In that time he hit 3 home runs for the Sox. Prior to '72, Kosco was a member of the 1965 AL Champion Minnesota Twins, though he did not appear in that year's World Series against the Dodgers. He signed 2 cards for me TTM.
7/8/17
One former Red Sox in TTM yesterday among 3 returns. I also hit an estate sale this morning, and picked up a could un-signed Red Sox items that may be of interest.
Tom Murphy - Murphy pitched for the Red Sox in 1976 and 1977. Murphy was fairly effective in 1976, after coming over in the Bernie Carbo deal with the Brewers, posting a 3.44 ERA for the Sox. He was far less effective in 1977, with a 6.75 ERA before being sold to expansion Blue Jays on July 27 that summer. Mr. Murphy signed 2 cards for me. The scans have been added to his Project Fenway page.
7/4/17
My update for today is a 50/50 I was able to get in from a kind member on SCN. He was able to pick up two former Red Sox for me.
Jean Machi - He pitched briefly for the Red Sox in 2015 (26 games), notching four saves. Machi was one of three players I needed to complete the 2015 roster. He is very difficult TTM, so it was nice to knock him off the list.
Mike Lansing played parts of two seasons with the Red Sox in 2000 and 2001. After having a very solid major league career for both the Expos and Rockies, hitting a career high .310 in 1999, Lansing struggled in Boston, hitting .234 in his 2 seasons. I remember him best as chirping constantly about being a starting player versus the platoon that Jimy Williams had him playing in. This 50/50 represents the 2nd Mike Lansing signature in my collection, as I was able to get him in person at Fenway Park back in 2001.
7/3/17 - Happy Independence Day!
I'm taking a bit of time to update a number of pick-ups I've had over the last week.
Jim Rice - Easily my best TTM of the year, Red Sox outfielder and baseball Hall of Famer Jim Rice signed one 1977 Topps card for me with a $10 donation. Jim's career certainly speaks for itself. A runner up for ROY in 1975, Rice won the AL MVP in 1978 posting historic numbers for total bases, hitting 46 home runs, 15 triples, and 213 total hits. Rice eclipsed the 100 RBI plateau on 8 occasions in his career, and hit over .300 seven times. Check out Jim Rice's Project Fenway Page to see all of his signatures in my collection.
Baby Doll Jacobson - I picked up former Sox leftfielder Baby Doll Jacobson on a signed and slabbed index card via eBay. Playing in 1926 and 1927, Jacobson put up okay numbers. After being traded to the Red Sox part-way through the 1926 season, he hit .305 for the club. His success wained the next season, as he struggled to a .245 average before being sold to the Cleveland Indians on June 12. This is the first Baby Doll Jacobson autograph in my collection
Jeff Newman - Jeff Newman caught 75 games for the Red Sox in 1983 & 84 after coming over as part of the Tony Armas for Carney Lansford trade between the Sox and Angels. Newman has always been tough TTM, but has been consistent in 2017. I was finally able to scrounge up two A's cards (all that I had) to send to Mr. Newman. Both cards were added to Jeff Newman's Project Fenway site.
Chris Donnels - Donnels played 40 games for the Red Sox at thirdbase in 1995. He played fairly well as a fill in that season, hitting a solid .253 with a couple homers and 11 RBI. For most of that season, the Sox could not find a serviceable replacement at third after trading Scott Cooper, though Donnels did well in his roll. He signed 5 cards for me TTM.
6/10/17
One big one in this week! I picked up a signed index card of former relief pitcher Murray Wall, completing the 1959 Red Sox roster. Wall did not make much of an impact out of the Red Sox bullpen, though did hang on for parts of three seasons. Interestingly he was traded to the Senators in 1960, only to be returned to the Red Sox later that season after Dick Hyde was found to be injured. Tragically, Murray Wall took his own life at the age of 45 in 1971.
5/28/17
Here is an old purchase of mine from last December. I picked up a signed index card of former Red Sox outfielder Amos Strunk. Amos spent a parts of the 1918 and 1919 seasons with the Red Sox, playing in the 1918 World Series. He was an above average outfielder with an average bat. Interestingly, he was a member of 4 World Series winning teams, and led the American League in fielding percentage as a centerfielder five times over his career. You can view my autograph of Amos Strunk HERE on his Project Fenway Page!
5/27/17
One return today. Former Red Sox outfielder and DH Billy Ashley signed 5 cards from his home address. Billy came up through the Dodgers farm system as a highly touted prospect. He was the 1994 Minor League Player of the Year after hitting .345 with 37 home runs and 105 RBIs. He was less memorable if not impressive in his 13 games with the Red Sox, hitting .297 with 3 homers and 7 RBIs. You can check out my Billy Ashley autographs at his Project Fenway site, linked HERE
5/15/17
One return today. Former infielder Denny Doyle signed 4 items for me in a little over 3 weeks. Doyle is best remembered in Boston for being a member of the 1975 pennant-winning club. He was thrown out by George Foster in the bottom of the 9th of Game 6 of that year's World Series, preceding Carlton Fisks' home run. Below is a picture of what I received today. All autographs have been added to Denny Doyle's Project Fenway page, found here.
I received Brad Ziegler back from Spring Training last week. He signed a 2016 Topps Heritage Red Sox card for me. Ziegler pitched quite well for the Sox out of the bullpen after being acquired from the Diamondbacks. Quite honestly, I think John Farrell misused Ziegler, who should have been the set-up man for Craig Kimbrel. Instead, he was used sparingly at times, and left out of important 8th inning situations. You can view my signed Brad Ziegler baseball card as well as his Red Sox statistics on his Project Fenway player site.
3/12/17
One TTM back yesterday - former Sox relief pitcher Steve Farr. Farr pitched only a half-season with the Red Sox before the strike in 1994, though made a good career for himself beforehand with the Royals and Yankees. Farr retired after his stint with the Red Sox with 132 career saves. I was able to track down a Red Sox card of Farr (shown below). He signed 5 cards for me, which have been added to his Project Fenway page.
3/11/17
I got one Red Sox TTM yesterday - former outfielder, pinch hitter, and World Series hero Bernie Carbo signed 2/2 from his home. Bernie is best remembered for his 8th inning home run in Game 6 of the 1975 Fall Classic. Bernie has always been great with his fan mail. I've added pictures to his Project Fenway site.
3/9/17
Some updates coming in the next few days. I've made a purchase on COMC, as well as made a significant trade on SCN. As Spring Training is gearing up, so to is my focus on this insane collection!
12/28/16
Some updates...
Rick Porcello - I picked up a signed card of Rick Porcello before the season started. And what a season it was! Porcello, of course, took home the Cy Young Award for this past season.
Galen Cisco pitched for the Red Sox in 1961-1962 and 1967, where he was generally mediocre. Before being signed by the Red Sox, he was the captain of the 1957 National Champion Ohio State football team. In addition to playing in Boston, he was a member of the 1962 Mets and 1969 Royals.
Darrell Brandon was a pitcher for the 1967 Impossible Dream Red Sox. He was also a member of the 1969 Seattle Pilots. He signed four items for me in October.
Nels Potter was a Red Sox for only one season, 1941, when he compiled 2 wins while throwing the screwball. Potter was later a member of the 1944 AL Champion Browns, and 1948 NL Champion Boston Braves. He was 9th in the league in MVP voting in 1944, winning 19 games for the Brown.
Skeets Dickey was a member of the 1935 and 1936 Red Sox as a back-up catcher. He was the brother of Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Bill Dickey. I picked this postcard up from a member on Sportscollectors.
Rusney Castillo - I picked up a signed card of Castillo on e-Bay in November, and have finally added a scan. The Sox signed Castillo out of Cuba with the hopes that he would develop into the next Yoenis Cespedes. To date he has been disappointing in the outfield, and has spent a lot of time in Pawtucket.
Diego Segui - Signed 3 cards for me from his home in Kansas. Segui has always been solid through the mail, and this time was no different. He was a member of the 1975 AL Champion Red Sox club, and made a single appearance in that year's World Series.
Jim Lonborg - Signed a few teams cards for me and the 1993 Ted Williams card shown below. Lonborg, the '67 Cy Young Award winner is a beloved figure around Boston. This autograph was received c/o his home.
Vic Correll - Added 2 signed cards I received from Mr. Correll TTM. Correll made his debut with the Red Sox in 1972, collecting 2 hits and an RBI in his only game played.
12/24/16
In the mail today I received a cut autograph of Jim Tabor from eBay. Tabor played for the Sox from 1938 through 1944. He had some success for the team, but never had any shining seasons. Tabor passed in 1953, making this a fairly difficult autograph to find
10/24/16
I received two Wilton Veras signed cards this year courtesty of a 50/50 on SCN. Veras had an excellent rookie campaign for the Sox in their playoff run of 1999. Many thought he would be the next long-time thirdbaseman. He tailed off in 2000, his last for the Sox.
10/23/16
Ted Sizemore signed 2 cards for me, including the 1980 Topps Red Sox card below. Sizemore was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1969, and had several decent seasons for the Dodgers and Cardinals. He spent time during two unremarkable seasons with the Red Sox in 1979 and 1980. You can view his Red Sox page and the four autographs I have of his in my collection HERE.
8/6/16
A lot of updates to start putting in. Back in July the Red Sox Wives hosted their annual charity drive with the Greater Boston Food bank. For a $10 donation to the food bank, you receive a signed Red Sox photograph. I was able to pick up 5. Because it's his last season I tried to load up on David Ortiz, and picked up three autographs. I was also able to get David Price, and a Mookie Betts who I badly wanted to add to my collection. Click on the player names to see their player pages.
6/27/16
Last week I received a signed 1974 Topps card from former Sox hurler Don Newhauser. This success is significant in that before this spring, Newhauser has been impossible TTM. I figured I'd never have the opportunity to have this card signed. I had seen a few successes in May, however, and tried it out. It's a nice addition over the signed index cards I had previously purchased.
Newhauser had an excellent 1972 season out of Boston's bullpen, picking up 4 victories, 4 saves, and keeping a solid 2.43 ERA. After arm trouble in 1973, he was out of the majors after two games in 1974. Newhauser's page has been updated. Here is the card:

More updates: I received 3 signed cards from former Red Sox reliever, and member of the 1986 AL Champ Red Sox, Joe Sambito. He had his best years as a relief pitcher for the Houston Astros, earning All-Star honors in 1979. He signed 3 cards for me in approximately a week, though unfortunately kept the 1977 Topps RC that I sent to him as well. Here is what did come back:
6/19/16
Second update for today is a success I got a while ago. Jim Lonborg signed his rookie card for me, as well as a Topps All-Time Fan Favorites card, with two index cards, back in March. I send to Mr. Lonborg usually once a year as I find cards. I have approximately 20 Lonborg autographs in my collection in total.
Updated Julian Tavarez's page. I picked up another signed card of his from the Main Line booth at Rich Altman's show in April. It's my second signed card of Tavarez. Tavarez was a member of the 2007 World Series Champion Sox - I can never seem to pass up an opportunity to add another autograph from those championship teams!

Some updates coming in the next few weeks. For today, I added a Tex Hughson signed card to my collection. I picked this up for an absolute steal on eBay. It is a 1975 TCMA card set for the 1946 Red Sox. Hughson won 20 games for the '46 Sox.
4/10/16 A couple e-bay purchases to update this weekend. These are over the last couple weeks. I picked up autographs of former Sox players Wally Moses and Danny MacFayden
Wally Moses was a member of the 1946 pennant winning club, and was actually set to be one of the heroes of the Series had the Sox pulled it out, as he hit .417 against the Cardinals. I've been watching Moses autographs for a while, with the hopes of
finding one at my price, which I was able to do at $9!
Danny MacFayden had a long big league career, spanning over 17 years from 1926-1943. He spent his first 6 1/2 seasons with the Sox starting in 1926. Most remarkably he won 16 games in 1931, placing him 20th in MVP voting for the league. Part way through the 1932 season he was dealt to the Yankees, though he did not appear in that year's World Series against the
Cubs.
3/12/16 Big mail-days over the last several days. I got two Red Sox
TTMs and one cool ebay purchase come in. First, the ebay
purchase.
I've wanted to pick up a 1946 Red Sox program since finding
one at the Brimfield Antique show last year. After some
hunting, I found one in my price range with the added bonus
of having a couple autographs on it. One of them was harder to find former Red Sox Oscar "Ski" Melillo. Ski Melillo was an
infielder for the Red Sox from 1935-1937. He was a coach of the
Indians in the game for which this program was printed.
Another interesting find in this program is that it matched two excellent pitchers from 1946. 20 game winner Tex Hughson went for the Sox, oppsing Hall of Famer Bob Feller. Boy would I love to have been at that game. This is probably the oldest individual item in my collection. The inside has been scored, though I haven't taken pictures as the paper is pretty worn.
Former Red Sox catcher Bob Didier signed a '73 and '74 Topps
card c/o his home in 176 days. This is a nice upgrade to my
collection as I had previously had only an index card. Mr.
Didier played in 5 games for the Red Sox in 1974, collecting one single and an RBI.
Former Red Sox outfielder Billy Hatcher signed four cards c/o
Cincinnati Reds Spring Training, where he works as the
firstbase coach. Previously I have been 0/1 in trying to acquire
Hatcher TTM, so it was nice to have a success this time around. These are the first Red Sox cards of Billy that I have in my collection. He hit .750 for the Reds in the 1990 World Series against the A's. He played a solid, though not special, outfield for the Red Sox in 1992, 1993, and 1994. I best remember him for a steal of home plate in 1993.
3/7/16 Today I received a kind gesture from Mark at SCN, who gifted me a signed card of 2015 pitcher Anthony Varvaro. Varvaro brings me up to 72.2% of the all-time roster. Thank you Mark for the awesome addition!
3/6/16 Today's update is a purchase I made from SoxSignatures.com
when they had a $1 photo sale. I ended up picking up six Red
Sox photos. They include:
This is part of a larger update to the site that has brought my overall percentage safely over 70% to 72.1%. I will be highlighting some of my additions since September.
9/12/15 500!!!!!
Congrats to David Ortiz for clubbing the 500th Home Run of his storied career!
9/7/15 Bill Kennedy pitched for one mediocre season in Boston in 1953. He finished with 2 saves and a 3.70 ERA in 16 games pitcher. I picked this Index card up via a purchase from Mickey's Sportscards.
Del Wilber was a part time catcher from 1952-1954 with the Red Sox, hitting 7 home runs while driving in 29 in 1953 . The addition of this Del Wilber card to my Sox collection closes out the 1953 roster, giving me 49 completed rosters. To date, 1953 is the earliest I have.
9/6/15 Next up is an index card I purchased on ebay from user lshap, of former pitcher Tom Herrin. Herrin pitched in 14 games for the Red Sox in 1954, earning little distinction. He has been one of the tougher autographs of the 50's to track down, so I was excited when this one came up for auction. I've still never seen a signed card of him though.
9/5/15 Joe Dugan played for 80+ games on the 1922 Red Sox before being traded to the Yankees, for whom he is best known. Dugan was a member of the famed 1927 Yankees, playing alongside Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. In later years, Dugan was local to Massachusetts, living in Norwood. He was a frequent visitor to a great watering hole in Norwood, called Lewis's.
You can visit Dugan's Project Fenway page by clicking HERE.
8/30/15 Here is another new pickup for my Red Sox collection. I purchased a PSA certified and encapsulated autograph of former Red Sox outfielder Earl Webb.
Earl Webb, who played for the Red Sox in 1930 to 1932, is best know for setting the record for doubles in a season with the 67 he clubbed in 1931. He hit a solid .333 in 1931, adding 104 RBIs. You can view Earl Webb's Project Fenway page HERE.
8/29/15 I recently picked up this awesome signed photograph of Bobby Kielty's 2007 World Series home run. It actually ended up being the winning run in Game 4.
I purchased it from the website SoxSignatures.com. The company is run by a fellow Red Sox collector, who is aiming to give fans an inexpensive way to add authentic Red Sox memorabilia to their collections. He has many Game Used items of Sox minor leaguers, purchased directly from the players. I would suggest that any fans check out the site.
4/18/15 At Rich Altman's show last week, I was able to track down a Niuman Romero signed card from Main Line Autographs! I have been searching for Niuman, a utility infielder, of some time. He made a brief 2-game stint with the Sox in 2010, and was the only player I needed to complete the roster. I've not got a complete run of Red Sox rosters from 1968 through 2012.
4/7/15 Great win by the Sox yesterday! The 8-0 win over Philly isn't a bad way to start the season. Buchholz pitched well, and the offense was the explosive force that we will hopefully see all summer. Newcomer (and old friend) Hanley Ramirez topped the performances of Buchholz and Pedroia but hitting two homers of his own, including a grand slam. Check out my Hanley Ramirez autograph by clicking on his name.
4/5/15 Here is a list of other players of whom I've added additional signatures to my Red Sox collection. Benny Agbayani, Rick Aguilera, Gary Allenson, Shane Andrews, Carlos Baerga, Jeff Bailey, Aaron Bates, Greg Blosser, Bob Bolin, Tom Burgmeier, Bill Campbell, Tony Clark, Pete Daley, Manny Delcarmen, Denny Doyle, Frank Duffy, Alan Embree, Scott Fletcher, Chad Fonville, Rich Gale, Rich Gedman, Mauro Gomez, Chris Hammond, Brock Holt, Terry Hughes, Dalton Jones, Fred Kendall, Mike Maddux, Pat Mahomes, Mark Malaska, Ramon Martinez, Lou Merloni, Dave Morehead, Tim Naehring, Jon Nunnally, Syd O'Brien, David Pauley, Rudy Pemberton, Chuck Rainey, Jody Reed, Jerry Remy, Jim Rice, Ed Romero, Chuck Schilling, Diego Segui, Earl Snyder, Bob Stanley, Mike Stanton, Frank Sullivan, Jose Tartabull, Koji Uehara, Dave Valle, Todd Walker, Eric Wedge, Mark Whiten, Jim Willoughby.
4/4/15 Finally an update. In the past few months I've added the following players to my Red Sox collection. I'm now up to 67.4% of the all-time roster!
Dick Stuart - Dr. Strangeglove had two great season for the Red Sox in '63 and '64. I picked a signed 8x10 up from Millerboys5 on ebay. I also finished up the 1963 Roster with this pick-up.
Jonathan Diaz - Jonathan was briefly a member of the 2013 World Champion team. I got one card signed c/o Toronto Spring Training in March.
Christian Vazquez - Vazquez is an up-and-coming Sox backstop. He was slated to be the starting catcher this season, but will be out for the season, needing Tommy John surgery.
Joe Kelly - I got this Red Sox starter c/o Spring Training in March.
Al Papai - He pitched for the Sox in 1950, winning 4 games. I picked this index card up from a member on SCN for $3.
Carl Sumner - Sumner was an outfielder for the 1928 Red Sox. That year he batted .276.
Dan Butler - Butler has since moved on from the Sox organization, but he was a part time catcher in 2014. He signed one signature card for me c/o the Nationals spring training.
Jack Kramer - Kramer was an 18 game winner in 1948 for the Sox. That season he lead the AL in winning percentage.
2/7/15- In the wake of an awesome Patriots Championship, I got one TTM this week. Former Red Sox relief pitcher Jim Willoughby signed 3 cards in 3 weeks from his home. They came out very nicely, and are a great addition to my Red Sox collection. Mr. Willoughby was a member of the 1975 Red Sox.
1/31/15 - First update of the new year! I just updated my player totals with some additions I received around Christmas. My roster completion is at 66.9% now. I was also able to complete my 46th roster with the purchase of a 1974 Topps card signed by former pitcher Ramon Hernandez, completing the 1977 roster.
The bulk of my other additions were members of the 2014 team, including Anthony Ranaudo, Edwin Escobar, Ryan Roberts, Jonathan Herrera, Chris Capuano, Kelly Johnson, Jemile Weeks, Alex Hassan, Bryce Brentz, Heath Hembree, Tommy Layne, Corey Brown.
Starting this year, I'll be posting my TTM successes on this page, whether they were a member of the Red Sox or not. My goal continues to be to reach the 70% mark for roster completion. Maybe this year!!
12/11/14 - Unfortunately, Jon Lester signed with the Chicago Cubs yesterday, for a reported 6 year contract. It's unfortunate as the Sox should have done more to entice Lester to return to Fenway. Anyway, I wish Lester well, and hope he dominates the NL. It was a lot of fun watching him pitch for the Sox. He's definitely been one of my favorite players over the last half-decade.
Also a larger update is coming in the next couple weeks with a whole bunch of Red Sox stuff I've gotten done.
10/16/14 - Ten years ago today, the Red Sox lost Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS
by the score of 19-8 at the hands of the Yankees. It marked the
lowest of the low, and the precipice of success. Looking back it's
amazing what's happened to the Red Sox franchise since this
day. It was the last moment we took "the curse" as gospel. The
Globe had a good article about it today. Check it out.
I've updated everything I've gotten in the last couple months.
This includes the 2014 Red Sox roster. Adding that many new
players has dropped my overall percentage down to 66.1.
However, thanks to the folks at SCN, I've made several trades
for some of those players that will help my percentage increase.
8/3/14 - Friday and Saturday were the annual Red Sox Wives can and
cash drive to benefit the Greater Boston Food Bank. For a $10
donation or 10 canned goods you get a signed Red Sox 4x6
photograph. I've gone most years since 2006, though have taken
the last two "off." Although the booths were inside Fenway this
year due to the rain, I was able to make my donation and come
away with four pictures.
Mike Napoli, David Ortiz, Koji Uehara, and Xander Bogaerts for
a donation to a great cause? Not a bad day.
7/28/14 - Let's keep the updates going. Today I'm going to focus on some
members of the 1967 Impossible Dream team that I've recently received TTM. All are upgrades in the collection, from index cards to cards.
Jim Lonborg - The 1967 Cy Young Award winner signed a small
group of cards for me that I found at a recent show. They
included a 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969 Topps. I think they all look
marvelous!
Don Demeter - He signed two cards for me from his home. This
included a 1960 Topps Dodgers card, and a 1966 Tigers card. I
would love to have his 1967 Topps Red Sox card, but as a high
number it is a bit expensive for me.
Hank Fischer - Although he only pitched for a short bit in '67, I
was so glad to get Mr. Fischer back TTM. He is not always
automatic. Luckily for me he signed a beautiful 1967 Topps Red
Sox card for me!
George Thomas - I had only previously had signed index cards
before Mr. Thomas signed a 1966 and a 1967 Topps card for me.
Both are nice vintage Red Sox cards.
Galen Cisco - Another brief member of the '67 club signed a 1963
Topps card for me c/o his home. He also signed a couple of mid-
60's Mets team cards which I did not include scans of. One day I
would like to send him his '62 Topps RC. Until then, this '63 will
do just fine!
7/26/14 - An article came out in today's Globe discussing a conversation
between columnist Dan Shaughnessy and Carl Yastrzemski. In the
interview, Yaz revealed that he feels as though Ortiz should rank
ahead of him on the Red Sox all-time list of great players. I would
love to hear what people who check this site think!
Also yesterday, the Red Sox traded Jake Peavy to the Giants for
two prospects. Although Peavy struggled in Boston, he was a part
of the 2013 championship team. I certainly wish him the best of
luck in the National League!
Now for some Updates!!!!
Dick Stigman signed several items for me TTM, and included an
awesome Red Sox photo! He also included a nice note. Stigman
played for the sox in 1966, winning two games. His best year was
probably 1960 for the Indians when he was an All-Star as a
rookie.
Rollie Sheldon, a teammate of Stigman's in 1966 signed four
items for me including 1966 and 1969 Topps cards. He also
included a short note about how he did not enjoy playing in
Fenway as a Red Sox player. I am curious as to why - perhaps he was treated unfairly by the fans as a former Yankees. I'm still very happy to get his autograph TTM. He has a nice signature and
is very generous TTM.
7/21/14 - One autograph in today. I picked up a Jimmy Cooney signed index
card via e-bay. He played 11 games for the 1917 Red Sox, not
making much of an impact on the team. After his time in Boston,
he was part of three triple plays, including turning an unassisted
triple play.
7/20/14 - I picked 3 autographs (1 new addition and 2 "upgrades") up from Brian at ABC Unlimited.
Angel Sanchez - He played only one game in 2010 for the Red Sox,
going hitless in three at bats.
Jim Pagliaroni - Pagliaroni played parts of 4 seasons for the Sox,
hitting a high of 16 home runs in 1961. I picked up a '65 Topps card
from ABC.
Bob Tillman - Tillman was a catcher for the Red Sox from 1962
through 1967. He set career highs in 1964 with 17 homers, 61 RBIs,
and a .278 average. He was also behind the plate for the no hitters
pitched by Earl Wilson (1962), and Dave Morehead (1965). I picked
up a '66 Topps card signed in blue ballpoint.
7/17/14 - Im very excited about today's update. I was recently able to pick up a PSA certified index card of former catcher Elston Howard. It took me a while to find the right item of Howard at the right price, but the wait paid off! Elston, better known for his days as a Yankee, was a member of the 1967 & 1968 roster. This signature completes the roster of the '68 club for me. He currently places third on the all-time list of World Series games played. He was also the first African-American to play of the Yankees.
7/14/14 - My first update is two certified cards I picked up from COMC.com.
Quintin Berry - Picked up a certified issue by Panini. This is my first
Berry.
Hipolito Pichardo - I upgraded from a signed index card to a
certified 1996 Leaf Signatures card.
7/13/14 - First I wanted to show off an awesome PSA Certified Ted Williams Perez Steele I picked up on Amazon.com. I've been wanting one for some time, and finally pulled the trigger. You can see it here, or check out my Ted Williams page.
It's been a while since I've updated the site, but I've been busy sending cards out TTM to make improvements in my collection. I've focused on mostly vintage cards to add cards of players whom I previously had only index cards, or Red Sox cards of players whom I previously had only non-Red Sox cards. The responses I've gotten have been great! I have a ton of stuff to add to the site, which I'll be doing in the coming weeks.
5/22/14 - I added two new autographs to my collection thanks to David Smalling, who gave me a great deal. I only paid $1 each!
Hersh Freeman - Pitched for parts of three seasons in the 1950's
for the Red Sox.
Bob Cremins - He pitched briefly for the Red Sox in 1927 when he
had a 0-0 record.
5/15/14 - I added two very tough 1990's Red Sox recently through SportsCollectors trades. The addition of these two complete the 1990's for me.
Tony Rodriguez - He played 27 games as a utility infielder for the 1996 Red Sox. I was able to trade for a minor league card signed
during the Puerto Rican League season.
Robinson Checo - The "Dominicant Man of Mystery Man" was a big Dan Duquette signing that did not pan out. He ended up pitching only seven games for the Sox between 1997 and 1998.
5/4/14 - An update on two TTM returns today. I already had both players, but was able to add signed Red Sox cards this time around.
Former OF Mike Cameron signed 3 Red Sox cards for me.
2013 Champion Matt Thornton signed 2 Red Sox cards c/o the
Yankees.
4/7/14 - I was lucky enough to be surprised by my wife with tickets to tonight's Red Sox game against the Rangers. It was David Ortiz bobblehead to boot!!!!! It was a great surprise and the Sox pulled out the 5-1 win behind an excellent John Lackey performance.
Check my David Ortiz page to see a picture of the cool bobblehead they gave out! It's a nice little addition to my Ortiz collection.
3/23/14 - I updated three player pages this morning with new autographs I've received.
Ken Keltner - I added an index card signed in blue to replace the
signed cut I already had.
Dick Radatz - I added a cut signature of Radatz.
Kirk Bullinger - Received 2 index cards signed TTM sent last March
3/14/14 - I've got a major update to do today, as I've added quite a few former Bosox. I've been lucky to pull up to 65.5% of the All-Time Roster. Although I have a goal of 70% by the end of 2014, it'll be hard going from here. I've got most of the "easy" players. Anyway, here is the update
First is a purchase I made from Mickey's Sportscards, who deal with autographs as well as vintage cards. All came at a great price. In my three orders from Mickey's, I've never had a problem. In addition to the Sox players, I also picked up a nice IC of Hall of Famer Hal Newhouser. I added each of these guys from Mickeys for between $4 and $5
Ivan Calderon - Finishes up the 1993 Roster.
Bob Johnson - Johnson was an All-Star with the Red Sox in 1945
Mel Deutsch - Deutsch was a brief member of the AL Champion 1946 Red Sox
I won the following four index cards from lelands. com via ebay, each for $3. Not a bad deal for four deceased members of Red Sox nation.
Duane Josephson - Completes the 1971 Roster
I picked up Jake Jones and Ed Durham from ebay seller 4585lou. I also added a Dick Radatz cut as well as to these new additions.
I also added these two via ebay from seller rjwenterprisesinc. Interesting to note, Pipgras was a member of the vaunted 1927 Yankees before joining the Red Sox in 1933.
Rip Repulski - Finishes up the 1961 Roster.
Finally, all of these guys came in via other ebay or SCN deals.
Ralph Brickner - Pruchased from ebayer kylesportscards. I wonder why Brickner wasn't given more of a chance to play after 1952, considering both his success as well as the Red Sox lack of strong pitching.
Sergio Valdez - From ebayer sd40. Valdez finishes off the 1994 Roster.
Stephen Drew - From an SCN member at a great price!
Lynn McGlothen - From ebayer the_sports_page. McGlothen, who passed away in 1982 is a toughie. Finishes out my '72 and '73 Rosters.
Don Newhauser - Purchased from ebayer amazingautographs. I had been watching this item for several months and decided to pull the trigger to finish out the 1974 Roster.
John Wyatt - Purchased from ebayer gnh73. I thought this example matched exemplars quite well. One of the few I need to finish out the '67 Impossible Dream Roster
Bob "Riverboat" Smith - From ebayer lizzyslocker. This one matched other exemplars veyr well, so I decided to take a chance.
Sammy White - From ebayer city_liquidators. On the back side of this, I found a Billy Consolo signature as well.
3/3/14 - Added Jim Busby, Zach Crouch, Bob Adams, and Ed Phillips in a deal with SCN member agee. I also added former pitcher Leo Kiely with an ebay purchase. He appeared with the Sox throughout the 1950's.
Zach Crouch finishes off the decade of the 1980's for me. I know have an autograph of every player who played from the Red Sox from 1980-1989. I needed Crouch to finish off the 1988 roster. He appeared in three games for the Sox that year.
1/27/14 - Added Andy Gilbert, Jim Bagby Jr, Joe Heving, Dan Smith, Zach Stewart, and Mike Napoli to my Sox collection. Both Andy Gilbert and Jim Bagby Jr were members of the American League Champion 1946 team. Dan Smith, a relief pitcher on the 2000 team, completes that year's team roster.
Napoli is a TTM return from Red Sox spring training.
12/30/13 - Added Dale Alexander, Dick Ellsworth, Ben Flowers, Ray Haley, Marty Karow, Billy Klaus, Marv Owen, Joe Trimble, & Bill Schlesinger to my collection. They have been updated in the All-Time Roster & Yearly rosters.
