The Essential Role of the Social Worker as an Integration Agent for the Youth who Face School Failure
Vazquez-Fernandez, M.J. y Barrera-Algarin, E. (2016) The Essential Role of the Social Worker as an Integration Agent for the Youth who Face School Failure. British Journal of Social Work 2016; doi: 10.1093/bjsw/bcw137.
Research conducted in Seville (Spain) that proves how young people at risk of social exclusion and facing critical school failure are able to achieve social and labour market integration by following the so-called ‘pathways’ towards integration. At this point, the social worker plays a fundamental role as an integration agent. A survey taken of a sample of ninety-three students from five different Vocational and Professional Training centres that belong to four non-governmental organisations and also interviews were conducted with eighteen professionals from those establishments. In spite of their lack of education and of motivation in learning, their successful integration is possible by means of personalised pathways, the accompaniment of a labour integration agent and employer collaboration. Applying his scientific method, the social worker is a key figure, capable of supporting and harmonising ex professo the social and labour market integration process, as he promotes the resources and abilities of the different agents involved.
