Setting up Virtual Lab Machine for Network Simulator (NS-2) Experiments
In Wireless Communication & Networking Laboratory (EC4093) first three experiments (Experiment 1, 2 and 3) are NS-2 experiments. For conducting NS-2 experiments an Oracle VirtualBox based Virtual lab machine setup has been created. The Virtual Machine is self-sufficient to perform all the three NS-2 experiments without requiring any additional installation, configuration of setting.
Open Virtual Open Virtualization Format (OVF) based distribution created with pre-installed software and tools required for performing NS-2 experiments specially customized in our WC&N Lab context.
The pre-installed Virtual Machine includes following software tools for performing NS-2 experiments:
1. NS-2 Simulator (NS-2 Version: 2.35)
2. Network Animator (NAM)
3. XGRAPH
4. Tracegraph202
Prerequisite software (downloads):
1. Oracle VirtualBox Software
2. ‘wcn_lab.ova’ 1.64 GB (Open Virtual Open Virtualization Format (OVF) is an open standard for packaging and distributing virtual appliances or, more generally, software to be run in virtual machines.
Steps by step process to setup NS-2 Virtual Lab machine in your host computer.
Step-1: Installing Oracle VirtualBox & importing the Virtual Machine
A. Download the Oracle Virtual Box. Download Links: 32 bit | 64 bit
B. Install the downloaded setup file (.exe) Oracle VirtualBox in your system.
(If you already have Oracle VirtualBox installed in your host system then please ignore these steps and go to next step)
C. Download the Virtual Lab Machine file: ‘wcn_lab.ova’ file 1.64 GB | Download
(NB: Use Download Manager Software and make sure you have sufficient data pack before proceeding)
D. Start the Oracle VirtualBox software
E. Go to Menu > File > Import Appliance
F. Click on Folder Icon to Import ‘wcn-lab.ova’ file (Our Virtual Lab Machine)
G. Navigate to the location of the downloaded file ‘wcn_lab.ova’ (1.64 GB) which you have downloaded > Select the file > Click Open
H. Check the file path and Click <Next> button
I. Appliance setting (Do not change anything) > Press <Import> button
J. Software License Agreement Click on <Agree> button
K. Wait for the Virtual Machine to get imported ( This may take several minutes based on your system)
(NB: After this set is over your Virtual Machine import is finished and now you can run the machine)
Step-2: Running the Virtual Lab Machine
A. Select ‘wcn’ as the virtual machine and > Click on <Start> button
B. Full Screen Mode: Click on <Switch> button
C. The Virtual machine will boot (wait …)
D. After the boot is over it will land in log-in page Password: kiit (all small letters)
E. After giving the password you can successfully log on to the Virtual Lab Machine
F. NS-2 Lab material <folder> located on Desktop for reference
(NB: NS-2 Lab manuals, Codes, Study materials, Step by step procedure to perform experiments all are given inside the folder)
Step-3: Performing the Experiments
(Refer WCN LAB NS-2 Procedure by Ayaskanta Mishra.pdf)
A. NS-2 (Execution)
B. NAM (Execution)
C. XGRAPH (Execution)
D. Tracegraph202 (Execution)
