Dr. Prasant Misra is a Senior Scientist in the Data and Decision Sciences division of TCS Research. He also serves as Visiting Faculty in the Department of Cyber Physical Systems at IISc Bangalore. His current research is centered around optimization and decision intelligence for operations management of urban mobility, electric vehicles, and infrastructure systems. Earlier in his career, he worked extensively on computational informatics, particularly in the design of energy-efficient sensing and information processing techniques for low-power network embedded systems.
He has authored over 60 publications, position papers, and editorials spanning cyber-physical systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), mobile systems, and electric mobility. His contributions have been recognized through numerous honors and awards, including Best Paper Award Awards at ACM India CODS-COMAD 2023 and CSIRO ICTCC 2009, and Best Poster Awards at ACM SenSys 2016 and EWSN 2013. In 2017, he was named among MIT Technology Review’s TR35 India “Top 10 Innovators Under 35” and received the TCS "Exemplary Contribution Award". He is also a recipient of the prestigious ERCIM "Alain Bensoussan" & EU "Marie Curie Fellowship" in 2012 for scientific excellence, and the Australian Government's AusAID "Australian Leadership Awards Scholarship" in 2008 for his potential to make substantial impact on social, economic, and development challenges of the Asia-Pacific region at a leadership level.
Dr. Misra actively contributes to the broader scientific and professional community through his involvement with a wide range of academic, industry, and government bodies. He has served on the committees of leading professional organizations such as IEEE, ACM, and COMSNETS, and contributed to government agencies like MeitY, as well as standard development organizations such as BIS and ISO/IEC. He is currently the Chair-Elect (2025) of the IEEE Bangalore Section, Chair of the IEEE Industry Applications Society Bangalore Chapter, and a member of both the COMSNETS Association and the ACM India Membership and Chapters Committee. He previously held leadership roles as the Founding Chair of the India chapter of ACM SIGMOBILE (2019–2020) and Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Bangalore Chapter (2022–2023), during which the chapter received the IEEE Computer Society “Outstanding Chapter Award 2023“. In addition, Dr. Misra plays an active advisory role in public technology policy and capacity-building initiatives. He chairs the Technical Subcommittee for IoT and serves as a PRSG member for both the NASSCOM-MeitY FutureSkills Prime program and MeitY’s Smart City 2.0 project. He has previously contributed to BIS and ISO/IEC standards development on Smart Cities and Infrastructure (2016–2018). On the editorial front, he currently serves as Area Editor for Elsevier’s Ad Hoc Networks Journal and Associate Editor for the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine. He previously served as Series Editor of IoT for IEEE Communications Magazine (2019–2022). His commitment to volunteering and community service has been recognized through the IEEE Bangalore Section “Outstanding Volunteer Award" in 2018 and the COMSNETS Association “Outstanding Service Recognition award" in 2019 and 2020.
He has over 18 years of professional experience. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, and completed his Post-doctoral fellowship from RISE SICS (formerly the Swedish Institute of Computer Science), Stockholm. He has held research positions at CSIRO Australia and IISc Bangalore; short-term visiting positions at NICTA Australia, TIFR Mumbai, Universiteit Gent, ETH Zurich; and software engineering positions at NTT DATA. He is a senior member of the IEEE/Computer Society and ACM/SIGMOBILE. He is an ACM Distinguished Speaker.
