What is Powder Horn?

It is a course to help Venturing, Boy Scout and Varsity Leaders to safely conduct outdoor activities that are fun and challenging in nature.

Provides an introduction to the resources necessary to successfully lead their Venturers and older Boy Scouts and Team members through a program of high adventure.

And there are some that think this is summer camp for adults!!!! No kids to supervise with lots of fun.

Who can attend?

The course is intended for adult leaders that are involved with high adventure programs in their crew, troop or team. We will use the new syllabus which has been approved for older youth participation, including co-ed venturing youth.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course participants should have sufficient introductory information which will provide the following outcomes:

  • Knowledge of the health and safety requirements, and rules and regulations of the Boy Scouts of America as they apply to outdoor programs.
  • Introduction to the skills necessary to operate their outdoor program and the certifications necessary and how to obtain those certifications.
  • Knowledge of how to identify local resources and consultants for Ranger Award and High Adventure activities.

What will we do?

We will cover many activities including Shooting Sports, Aquatic Sports, Mountaineering, Wilderness Survival and many other high adventure events. We will spend between 1-2 hours on each event so that we have a basic understanding of the safety requirements, the nature of the activity and where to find resources for a successful outing. This course is NOT about powerpoints but will you hands on experiences with professional consultants.

Where is it held?

Powder Horn is an area-wide course so it's location can vary. This year's course will be at Cutter near Big Basin State park.
