The date, which is clear only on late impressions, is sometimes read as 1634, e.g. Hind & Münz.
Münz believed that the plate was executed with the assistance of pupils.
A contemporary inscription on the impression of the first state at Cambridge
(repr. Print Collectors Quarterly, [V] p.367) identifies the sitter,
who was a cousin by marriage and guardian to Saskia.
After several country appointments, he settled to Amsterdam in 1610, first officiating at the
Gasthuiskerk, and after 1622 in the Grote Kerk. He died in 1638, at the age of 74.
The inscription 'Aen Cornelis Jansz Sylvius dese vier printen' on the verso of an impression
was incorrectly described by Hofstede de Groot (Urkunden, 32) as being in the artist's hand
