Our mechanical system consists of an etch-a-sketch, two stepper motors, and a delrin box. The regular knobs of the etch-a-sketch have been taken off and replaced with custom cut gears. These same gears were put on each of the stepper motors, enabling them to turn the knobs. The box was shaped so that the smaller inner part of the bottom of the etch-a-sketch would fit within the box, holding it in place. The stepper motor was held in contact with the etch-a-sketch by the edges of the box. The box also allows the electrical components that control the stepper motors to be kept underneath the etch-a-sketch and away from sight. The result is a simple, functional, and aesthetically appealing mechanical system that allows the stepper motors to draw whatever is given to them on the etch-a-sketch.
