Welcome to a new school year. It will be a busy one for you with all the senior activities, which will eventually help you to arrive at your goal of graduation. First semester we will write a 10-15 page career paper to explore what opportunities and schools are available to you after graduation. We will be reading novels by British authors along with our daily assignments. Your goal will be to acquire 25 AR points every 9 weeks.
We will begin the year doing a quick review of English Grammar: parts of speech, diagram sentences, conjugate verbs, work with phrases, clauses, direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nouns and predicate adjectives, participles, gerunds, and infinitives. We will then begin an exciting tour into British literature starting with the Anglo Saxon era, followed by the Medieval Age and then Romanticism and Realism. We look at the role the Kings played in the upheaval that Britain experienced over the different eras, as well as delving into some catastrophe's such as the great fires and plagues seen in London. Some of the literature we will read includes Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, Macbeth, Paradise Lost, Pilgrim's Progress as well as English poetry.
You will need a notebook in which to keep notes on literary terms and authors' backgrounds, as well as a red pen. We will write the essays in an MLA format, with in-text citing and a reference page. There is an example of this in the File Cabinet. I look forward to seeing you in the fall and having a great year of reading, writing and discussions. There is a list of books for summer reading in the File Cabinet. I hope you will continue to read this summer!
