Description

[Myxomycetes plasmodia: home growing: description]

All depicted myxomycetes come from forests around Kyiv. Some of them were grown in culture. One culture of Physarum cinereum and 4 cultures of Fuligo are shown.

Ph. cinereum was found as plasmodium (designation in filenames: p1). This is the only culture, which sporulated in appropriate conditions.

Two cultures of Fuligo septica were grown from spores (in filenames: s8 and s15).

Two practically identical to them plasmodia were collected in pre-sporulation stage (p3 and p4). Their identification as Fuligo sp. seems to be reliable because of two reasons. Firstly, all observable features of these plasmodia (and their sclerotia) are common with two exact Fuligo cultures, while there are many clear differences between plasmodia of Fuligo and one of it's closest relatives, Physarum. Secondly, pre-sporulation appearance of these plasmodia was quite distinctive.

No differences between all 4 Fuligo cultures are visible. And these plasmodia do not fuse with each other (and, of course, with Physarum).

The site is intended for information exchange on related themes, especially culturing and behaviour of plasmodia, with all interested.

All the close-up images with increased depth of field were made with CombineZP software.
