To insure active participation from each DECA member, a set of guidelines and requirements have been created for all DECA members. There are four points on the DECA Diamond, each represented by an important aspect of the organization. The first point is Social Intelligence, which is the interactive part of DECA. Second, is Civic Consciousness, which includes the community service activities held during the school year. Third, is Vocational Understanding, which DECA members can obtain by participating in competitions throughout the year. Lastly, is Leadership Development, which includes all leadership conferences and various types of leadership roles within the DECA chapter.
As a DECA member, you should have earned a minimum of 300 points throughout the school year in order to remain a DECA member “in good standing’ and will be classified as a white member. A DECA member who achieves the goal of 400 points is promoted to the blue level, which is the most common. A member who receives 600 points or more with at least 40 points in each category will have reached DECA Diamond level, and they are the members who have the most prestige within the club. At the end of the year banquet, awards will be given to all DECA Diamond Club members.
Participating in DECA is a sure-fire way to stand out from the crowd. Colleges regard DECA and all of its standards with the highest respect, and what many don’t know is that it holds the same significance on a college application as Key Club and NHS. DECA also helps prepare students for jobs and life after high school and college. Students get the opportunity to travel and meet people from across the nation as well as from around the world. Active members gain a sense of belonging and acceptance from a group of people who share the same interests as themselves. Experiences and friendships gained in DECA are irreplaceable, and for many graduated DECA members recount it as the best part of their high school years.
