Update on the Fire Truck

posted May 6, 2018, 7:41 PM by Sean Sechrist

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Fire Truck fund. It is very much appreciated.

As an update, the truck has been in storage for seven years and is generally in good condition but will not start. Here is what has been done and still needs to be done:

1. Empty the gas tank and have it relined to eliminate corrosion. Completed
2. Drain and clean the fuel line from the tank to ensure adequate flow to the carburetor. Completed
3. Trace and confirm the condition of the wiring from the battery through the starter switch and coil to the distributor and magneto. Completed
4. Rebuild the distributor by replacing the points and condenser to validate spark to the plugs. Points and condenser replaced but still issues getting spark to the plugs. Needs additional work.
5. Confirm condition of the starter switch. The switch has a major crack in the housing which may be preventing current flow in the battery position. Needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
6. Clean and adjust the carburetor and validate gas flow to the cylinders. In process.
7. Clean and/or replace the spark plugs which appear heavily fouled. In process.
8. Inspect and clean the magneto and confirm current flow from the magneto to the plugs. Completed
9. Identify brothers and/or alumni who have interest in working on the truck. Ongoing

Once the fuel and electrical systems have been addressed we hope that the truck will start.

After that it's on to testing and addressing any mechanical issues (clutch, brakes, steering, pump) to assure the truck is safe to drive. Several brothers have asked about the projected cost to get the truck in operating conditions. While we won't know until we can get the truck started and attempt to drive it, I'm hoping we can limit the expenditures to under $1,000, excluding ongoing storage costs. Ideally we would like to find a storage location closer to campus (current location is a public storage facility about 25 miles away) at a lower cost. We have initiated contact with a commercial real estate agent to see what may be available.

Last, but certainly not least, is training one or more of the current brothers on how to drive and maintain the truck.

Please contact us at info@pika-bsaa.org for more information.

Carnival 2018

posted Mar 25, 2018, 5:29 PM by Sean Sechrist   [ updated Apr 18, 2018, 7:35 AM ]

Spring Carnival at CMU is April 19-21, 2018.

This year marks the 50th reunion for 1968 graduates, the 50th year since Tiger Shark II set a new buggy course record, the 25th year since Bullet set the course record, the 10th year since Chimera set a buggy course record. We are also coming back from an exciting 2nd place finish last year, which was PiKA's fastest non-winning time, and the 5th fastest time we have ever had on the course. The PIKEs have been training hard this year to take back our trophy.

We have several alumni contingents that will be well represented - initiates from the late 60s, the early 80s, and more. We will have at least 7 retired buggies on display. Carnival is the perfect reason to come back to campus to see your old friends and brothers again, watch PiKA buggy, and reminisce about good times old and new.

Weekend Schedule

Thursday, April 19:

    12pm - 2pm: Buggy Showcase
        Weigand Gym

Friday, April 20:

    8am - 12pm: Preliminary Buggy Races

We have reserved a room on campus from 1pm - 3pm for another lunch. There will also be presentations by the Beta Sigma Alumni Association (BSAA) and the Beta Sigma Corporation (BSC), and it will serve as the annual meetings. All brothers, alumni, and their families are welcome.

The BSAA will be holding elections for all positions at this meeting, and we are seeking volunteers and nominations. If you would like to give back to the chapter and meet lots of fellow alumni, it is a really fun and rewarding opportunity. There is a time commitment, but it's not too taxing - we meet once a month over conference call. Let us know if you have any questions or if you are interested at all.

Starting at 6pm on Saturday, we have reserved space on the upper floor of Mario's East Side Saloon in Shadyside, 5442 Walnut St, Pittsburgh, PA 15232. Snacks will be provided.

Carnival 2017 for Pi Kappa Alpha

posted Feb 12, 2017, 2:42 PM by Sean Sechrist   [ updated Apr 18, 2017, 12:47 PM ]

Spring Carnival at CMU is April 20-22, 2017

We are planning a “Pi Kappa Alpha CMU Reunion”.  It is a reunion for all the ages.  For those in school in the 1960’s, it is a 50th reunion.  Whether it 50 years (or more) from graduation, initiation or just your first day at CMU, it is a milestone for sure!  For those in school in the 1970’s, it’s a 40th reunion for all the same milestones.  We particularly want to celebrate these two milestones- 40 and 50 years.

Likewise, for those in school in the 1980’s it’s 30 years.  Who would think those in school in the early 1990’s would be celebrating a silver 25th anniversary?  The later 90’s are at 20.  And who knew the first classes of the new millennium are at 15 years!  Even the late 2000’s classes can be celebrating 10 years.

One thing is for sure, time does fly so don’t let this pass you by!  The reunion is sponsored by the Beta Sigma Alumni Association (BSAA) and the current active brothers.

Weekend Agenda of Activities

Thank you to everyone that made it out to the BSAA Carnival events. The turnout was amazing and it was great seeing so many alumni support the house in whatever way they could. Also, congratulations to the current actives for their excellent performance at buggy. While the result may not have been what we hoped for, it's wonderful to know that the tradition of excellence continues and there's a renewed commitment to the program. We hope to see everyone at Carnival next year!
