You'll Never Walk Alone

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Carousel. In England, the song's most successful performance was recorded in 1963 by the Liverpudlian Merseybeat group Gerry & The Pacemakers (peaking at number one in the singles chart for four consecutive weeks). It quickly became the anthem of Liverpool Football Club and is invariably sung by its supporters moments before the start of each home game. The words "You'll Never Walk Alone" also feature in the club crest and on the Shankly Gate entrance to the stadium.

Dedicated to Alex Hewko Jr. (1918 to 2009)

Mr. Hewko was a decorated World War II, U.S. Navy pilot who served in the Pacific Theater where he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He and his four brothers were the subjects of an Emmy nominated military-documentary and cover story, published by USA Today newspaper on the Memorial Day after 9/11/01. The story was broadcast on ABC TV News, and was featured on the History Channel.

Mr. Hewko had a stellar career as the Program Director of the Navy P3 Orion aircraft, at the Aviation Supply Office of the Lockheed Skunkworks in Philadelphia. In the private sector he held important positions at several aeronautics and space related corporations.

An exceptional athlete, Mr. Hewko played baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals organization and football with the Jacksonville NAS. Mr. Hewko also worked as a college sports umpire and referee.

I had the honor of knowing Mr. Hewko because he was a resident at a senior facility, where I volunteered at the piano. He liked to sing, and his favorite song was "You'll Never Walk Alone".
