Kate Bush Works

Kate Bush (born in 1958) is an English singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. She first came to note in 1978 when, 19 years old, she topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks with her debut single Wuthering Heights, becoming the first female artist to achieve a UK number-one with a self-written song. She has since released twenty-five UK Top 40 singles, including the top ten hits The Man with the Child in His Eyes, Babooshka, Running Up That Hill, Don't Give Up (a duet with Peter Gabriel) and King of the Mountain. She has released ten studio albums, all of which reached the UK Top 10. Her albums Never for Ever (1980) and Hounds of Love (1985) reached UK Number-One. She is the first British solo female artist to top the UK album charts.

Widely influential, and acclaimed for her eclectic, experimental and idiosyncratic music as well as her theatrical performances, she was nominated thirteen times for British Phonographic Industry awards, one of which she won: Best British Female Artist in 1987. She has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards. In 2002, she was recognised with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Bush was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2013.

The song Wuthering Heights remains her biggest-selling single. It appears on her 1978 debut album, The Kick Inside, and was also re-recorded for her 1986 album The Whole Story. The song is based on Emily Brontë's classic novel (1847) of the same name. Kate Bush was inspired to write the song by the last ten minutes of the 1970 movie version of the novel.

The song Running Up That Hill was the first single from Kate Bush's 1985 album, Hounds of Love. It peaked at Number 3 on the UK chart, and it reached the top 30 in the USA. In a review of the single, Allmusic journalist Amy Hanson wrote: "Always adept at emotion and beautifully able to manipulate even the most bitter of hearts, rarely has Bush penned such a brutally truthful, painfully sensual song." Running Up That Hill was featured as the main theme tune for the 1986 BBC 1 children's drama serial Running Scared.
