Bach Toccata and Fugues

Tausig and Busoni Transcriptions

One of the most famous works in the organ repertoire, the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565, is a piece of organ music usually attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach. However, since the 1980s, several scholars have expressed doubt that it was composed by Bach.

This electrifying work has been used in movies, television, video games, and telephone ringtones. It has been transcribed many times, including versions for solo piano, solo flute, solo horn, solo violin, large orchestra, concert band, wind ensemble, and rock band. Leopold Stokowski's 1927 transcription for large orchestra is used to open the classic Disney film Fantasia (1940). Perhaps the most notable piano transcriptions were written by the composer/pianists Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924) and Carl Tausig (1841–1871) .

The music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) is one of humanity's greatest treasures. It is unsurpassed in its expression of profound reverence for life, and in its depth and diversity of ideas and feelings. It provides boundless joy to listeners and performers.
