Edward MacDowell Woodland Sketches

To a Wild Rose is the first of the ten pieces in Edward MacDowell's Woodland Sketches (Opus 51), a collection of ten pieces for piano solo composed in 1896. It is the most popular of his short pieces.

Edward MacDowell (1860 - 1908) was an American composer and pianist. He is best known for his second piano concerto, and his piano-solo collections Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces, and New England Idylls. In 1904, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters; and in 1940, he was honored with a series of United States postage stamps.

The MacDowell Colony is an art colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire (United States), founded in 1907 by Marian MacDowell, pianist and wife of Edward MacDowell. The colony has hosted over six thousand writers, painters, musicians, etc. Each residence is limited to at most two months.
