Three Coins in the Fountain

Composed by Jule Styne with lyrics by Sammy Cahn, Three Coins in the Fountain is a song written for the 1954 movie Three Coins in the Fountain. (In the movie each of three characters throws a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome while making a wish.) Frank Sinatra's recording was used in the movie. Covers have been made by The Four Aces, Dinah Shore, and Harry James, among others. Three Coins in the Fountain received the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1954.

Jule Styne (1905-1994) was a British-American songwriter especially famous for his Broadway musicals, most notably Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Peter Pan (additional music), Bells Are Ringing, Gypsy, Do Re Mi, Funny Girl, Sugar, and the Tony-winning Hallelujah, Baby!. Styne was elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972 and the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981. In 1990, he received a Drama Desk Special Award and the Kennedy Center Honors.
