The Phantom of the Opera

The 1986 musical The Phantom of the Opera is an adaptation of the novel with the same name (original title: Le Fantôme de l'Opéra) by French writer Gaston Leroux. The novel was first published as a serial in the newspaper "Le Gaulois" from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. A book version sold very poorly, but various film and stage adaptations were successful, most notably the 1925 movie version and the 1986 musical.

The longest running Broadway show ever (as of 2013), that musical is one of the most lucrative entertainment enterprises of all time. The music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the lyrics were written by Charles Hart with help from Richard Stilgoe and Alan Jay Lerner.
