Thaïs Méditation

Composed for solo violin and orchestra, Méditation is a symphonic intermezzo in D major from Jules Massenet's opera Thaïs, first performed in Paris in 1894. Thaïs is one of the great encore pieces, and has been transcribed for violin/piano as well as other instruments.

Jules Massenet ( 1842 - 1912) was a French composer best known for his operas. His compositions were very popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and he ranks as one of the greatest melodists of his era. Although his style fell out of fashion after he died, many of his operas, such as Thaïs and Esclarmonde, are occasionally performed.
