Strauss' Wiener Blut

Wiener Blut (Viennese Blood or Viennese Spirit), Opus 354, is a waltz by Johann Strauss II, first performed in 1873 with the composer conducting at the wedding of Emperor Franz Josef's daughter. Subsequently, it was the first Strauss piece performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which had previously not wished to be associated with mere 'light' or 'pops' music. The waltz is heard on piano in the Tom and Jerry cartoon episode Johann Mouse, and a version of the waltz is heard in the 2011 movie Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

The Austrian composer Johann Strauss II (1825 - 1899) wrote more than five hundred waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. He was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the nineteenth century.
