Songs from a Secret Garden (1995) is the first international album by the duo called Secret Garden, consisting of Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and Norwegian composer/pianist Rolf Løvland. The album sold a million copies, going platinum in Norway and Korea; gold in Ireland, Hong Kong, and New Zealand; and it was on the Billboard New Age charts for most of 1996 and 1997. Barbra Streisand's I've Dreamed of You (on her album A Love Like Ours) was adapted from Track 8 (Heartstrings ) of Songs from a Secret Garden.
The Allmusic reviewer Carol Wright awarded the album four stars, and asserted:
"Secret Garden is Norwegian composer Rolf Løvland (piano, keyboards) and Irish violinist Fionnula Sherry. The album, however, offers much more than this duo; it is awash in orchestral strings (real ones), a choir (real one), and as many percussionists, harps, fiddles, keyboards, and whistles as are needed. Songs from a Secret Garden, a chart-topper in Europe, is unabashedly romantic, absolutely gorgeous. ... Although Celtic music fans will find many moments of bittersweet nostalgia between the violin, pipes, and pennywhistles, the album's closest musical relation might just be the intimate works of Maurice Ravel, particularly his Pavanne for a Dead Princess."
Nocturne was the winning song in the Eurovision Song Contest 1995, performed in Norwegian by Secret Garden representing Norway. The performance included two guest musicians: Norwegian vocalist Gunnhild Tvinnereim and Swedish nyckelharpist Åsa Jinder.
The track called Song from a Secret Garden became famous in Korea, and was featured in the drama 젊은이의 양지 in 1995. It was also used in the 1997 film Titanic.
Serenade to Spring (Danse mot var) was covered by singer Elisabeth Andreasson on her CD Stemninger.
Adagio was featured in Wong Kar-wai's 2004 movie 2046.
As of 2013, the duo Secret Garden has released seven studio albums: Songs from a Secret Garden (1996), White Stones (1997), Dawn of a New Century (1999), Once in a Red Moon (2002), Earthsongs (2005), Inside I'm Singing (2007), and Winter Poem (2011).
