Smetana's Die Moldau

"Die Moldau" is the German name for Vltava, a piece composed by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana in 1874. Written in the key of E minor, it is the second of the six pieces that comprise his Má vlast (My country/homeland), each of which is a symphonic poem depicting some aspect of the countryside, history, or legends of Bohemia. Die Moldau contains Smetana's most famous tune, an adaptation of the melody La Mantovana (attributed to the Italian renaissance tenor Giuseppe Cenci), which was also adapted for the Israeli national anthem Hatikvah.

Bedřich Smetana (1824 - 1884) was a Czech composer who pioneered the development of a musical style which became closely identified with his country's aspirations for independent statehood. Widely regarded as the father of Czech music, Smetana is best known for his opera The Bartered Bride, his symphonic cycle Má vlast, and his First String Quartet (called From My Life).
