Sea of Love

Sea of Love is a long-popular song written by John Phillip Baptiste ( Phil Phillips) and George Khoury. Phillips' 1959 recording of the song sold over one million copies. It reached number one on the United States Billboard R&B chart, number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and was awarded a gold disc. Nonetheless, it appears that Phillips was paid only $6800, and received no further royalties for the song or its recording. In October 2007, Phillips was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

Sea of Love has been covered by many artists, most notably The Honeydrippers, whose version reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and number one on the Adult Contemporary Chart in 1984.

Tom Waits gave the song a darker twist for the soundtrack to the 1989 Harold Becker film Sea of Love starring Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin. Waits included it on his 2006 collection Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards.

The soundtrack of the 2007 film Juno features a cover version of the song by Cat Power. It was also used in the 1989 TV movie Sweet Bird Of Youth, which starred Elizabeth Taylor.
