Scarlatti Sonatas

Domenico Scarlatti composed 555 keyboard-sonatas.

Domenico Scarlatti (1685 – 1757) was an Italian composer and son of composer Alessandro Scarlatti (1660 – 1725). Domenico Scarlatti's collection of thirty of those keyboard sonatas called Essercizi ("Exercises") was published in 1738 and became widely popular throughout Europe. He composed many other works, including his Stabat Mater of 1715 and Salve Regina of 1757. Domenico Scarlatti's works have been greatly admired by musicians such as Frédéric Chopin, Johannes Brahms, Béla Bartók, Dmitri Shostakovich, Vladimir Horowitz, Emil Gilels, and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. In the twentieth century, Horowitz's recordings on modern piano caused a huge surge in popularity for the Scarlatti sonatas.
