Mendelssohn Fantasie, Opus 28

Fantasy OP. 28

Mendelssohn completed his Fantasie in F-Sharp Minor for Piano (Opus 28; Sonate Ă©cossaise or Scottish Sonata) in 1833. This piece features chords with open fifths, open harmonies, pedaling that creates a fuzzy effect, and powerful, dissonant crescendos.

Each movement has a quicker tempo than the preceding one. The first movement (Con moto agitato) is a loose sonata. The second movement (Allegro con moto), is a scherzo. The third, and last, movement (Presto) is a fiery sonata.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847) was a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor of the early Romantic period. His compositions include great symphonies, concertos, chamber pieces, and works for solo piano. His String Octet, Midsummer Night's Dream overture, and violin concerto are among his most famous works.
