Mascagni's Intermezzo - Cavalleria Rusticana

Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) is an opera composed by Pietro Mascagni, with Italian libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci. The plot was adapted from a play written by Giovanni Verga. Cavalleria Rusticana premiered in 1890, and has often been performed with Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci.

The opera's symphonic Intermezzo appears in the sound track of several movies, most notably in the opening of Raging Bull and in The Godfather Part III, which featured a performance of the opera as a key part of the climax.

Pietro Mascagni (1863 – 1945) was an Italian composer most noted for his operas. He wrote seventeen operas and operettas, several orchestral and vocal works, as well as songs and piano music His masterpiece Cavalleria Rusticana caused a great sensation and ushered in the Verismo movement in Italian dramatic music.
