Lush Life

"Lush Life" is a jazz standard with lyrics and music written by Billy Strayhorn in the 1930's, starting when he was 16. Strayhorn, composer, pianist and arranger, is best known for his successful collaboration with Duke Ellington for about three decades. The song was performed privately by Strayhorn until he and vocalist Kay Davis performed it in 1948 with the Duke Ellington Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. It and Take the "A" Train are his signature compositions. The song is widely recorded, one of the most notable is by Nat King Cole.
