Love Me Tender

Adapted from Aura Lee, a sentimental Civil War ballad, Love Me Tender is a song recorded by Elvis Presley for the 1956 movie with the same name. Elvis performed the song on the The Ed Sullivan Show (television) on September 9, 1956, shortly before the single was release and about a month before the movie was released. On the following day the RCA record company received one-million advance orders for the song, making it a gold record before it was even released.

Elvis Presley (1935 – 1977) was one of the most popular American singers of the twentieth century. A cultural icon, he is widely known by the single name Elvis, and is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll". Presley's rise to national attention in 1956 transformed the field of popular music and had a huge effect on popular culture. As a catalyst for the rock-and-roll revolution, he was central in making it a focus of youth culture. With its racially-mixed origins (affirmed by Presley), rock-and-roll's success led to a new appreciation of African-American culture in America.
