Debussy Le petit Nègre

Le petit Nègre (L. 114) is a delightful piece for solo piano composed by Claude Debussy in 1909. Debussy may have originally intended to include the piece in his collection The Children's Corner (L. 113), which he dedicated to his daughter. The expression "le petit nègre" refers to a doll called a "golliwog". Quite popular in 1909, golliwogs were stuffed black dolls with red pants, red bow-ties, and wild hair. While some people view the golliwog as a lovable childhood artifact, others now believe that it is a symbol of racism against people of African descent.

With a musical style in which impression matters more than direction, the revolutionary French composer Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) produced a body of magnificent music, strikingly different from that of previous composers and having profound influence on subsequent composers.
