Last Tango in Paris: Soundtrack

Last Tango in Paris (Italian: Ultimo Tango a Parigi) is a 1972 movie, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and starring Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider, and Jean-Pierre Léaud. Music for the movie was composed by Gato Barbieri. The movie's portrayal of sexual violence and emotional turmoil led to international controversy and drew various levels of government censorship. For their contributions, Gato Barbieri won a Grammy Award, Marlon Brando received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Bernardo Bertolucci was nominated for Best Director.

Leandro Barbieri (born in 1932), known as "Gato (Spanish: cat) Barbieri", is an Argentinean jazz tenor-saxophonist and composer, famous during the 1960s free jazz movement, and known for his Latin jazz recordings in the 1970s. Following his success with Last Tango in Paris, he scored a dozen international movies in Europe, South America, and the United States. His 2002 album Shadow of the Cat won Billboard’s 2003 Latin Jazz Album of the Year, as well as a Latin Grammy nomination. In 2009, he received the UNICEF Award In Honor of Celia Cruz.
