La Paloma

Written by Spanish composer Sebastián Iradier , La Paloma is a widely popular song probably composed around 1863. Its habanera style (Cuban nineteenth-century dance music) is the basis for the the song's characteristic distinctive rhythm. Versions of La Paloma have been written in several languages for opera, pop, jazz, rock, military band, and folk music. The song entered the Guinness Book of World Records for being sung by the largest choir (88,600 people) in Hamburg, Germany, on May 9, 2004.

Also known as "Yradier", Sebastián Iradier (1809 - 1865) was a Spanish Basque composer. Fleurs d'Espagne, a collection of twenty-five of his most popular songs, was published in Paris in 1864. His composition El Arreglito was used by Georges Bizet in the opera Carmen.
