Astor Piazzolla Works

La muerte del ángel, Libertango, Milonga del Angel

La muerte del ángel (Death Angel) was composed by Astor Piazzolla as incidental music for the 1962 play Tango del ángel by Alberto Rodriguez Muñoz. In the play an angel heals the spirits of the residents of a shabby Buenos Aires neighborhood, but is ultimately killed in a knife fight. One of the distinctive pieces with which Piazzolla shook the conservative world of tango, La muerte del ángel was frequently played by Piazzolla in concert, and he recorded it on at least fourteen different occasions.

Piazzolla's Libertango was first published and recorded in 1974. The recording was made by a band led by Piazzolla who played the bandoneón. The title "Libertango" is a combination of the words "libertad" (Spanish for "liberty") and "tango", indicating Piazzolla's break from Classical Tango to Tango Nuevo. The piece has been covered and used by many artists.

Astor Piazzolla (1921 - 1992) was an Argentine tango composer. He revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style called 'nuevo tango', combining elements of jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with a variety of ensembles. (The bandoneon is an accordion-like musical instrument, particularly popular in Argentina, Uruguay, and Lithuania. It is an essential instrument in most tango ensembles.)
