Ivanovici's Waves of the Danube

One of the most famous Romanian melodies, Waves of the Danube (also known as Danube Waves Waltz) is a waltz composed by Iosif Ivanovici in 1880.

In 1946, Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin wrote a song called The Anniversary Song, an adaptation of Waves of the Danube that was recorded by Jolson and reached number two on the Billboard charts. Sucessful covers of the song were recorded by Dinah Shore, Guy Lombardo, Tex Beneke and the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Artie Shaw and his New Music Orchestra, Joni James, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Mitch Miller, and Andy Williams.

The melody has been used in the movies Dishonored (1931, Marlene Dietrich), The Jolson Story (1946), Jolson Sings Again (1949), Blondie's Anniversary (1947), The Anniversary (1968, Bette Davis), Mayerling (1968), Falling in Love Again (1980), When Father Was Away on Business (1985), Avalon (1990), Payback (1999), Father and Daughter (2000), and A Guy Thing (2003).

Iosif Ivanovici (1845 – 1902) was a Romanian military-band leader and composer. Best remembered for his waltz Waves of the Danube, he composed over 350 dances. In 1889, Ivanovici won the coveted March-Prize at the World Exhibition in Paris.
