Igor Stravinsky Works

Les cinq doigts is a 1921 piano composition by Igor Stravinsky. Subtitled 8 mélodies très faciles sur 5 notes (8 very easy melodies on 5 notes), the work consists of eight short pieces in which the right hand generally plays only five notes, remaining in essentially the same position at the keyboard throughout the work. The movements of the work have the following tempo markings:

  1. Andantino

  2. Allegro

  3. Allegretto

  4. Larghetto

  5. Moderato

  6. Lento

  7. Vivo

  8. Pesante

The Moderato is featured in the 2009 movie Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky.

Igor Stravinsky (1882 - 1971) was a Russian, and later French and American, composer, pianist, and conductor. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the twentieth century. Stravinsky's career is notable for its stylistic diversity. He first achieved international fame with three ballets commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev and first performed in Paris by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes: The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913). The last of these transformed the way in which subsequent composers thought about rhythmic structure and was largely responsible for Stravinsky's enduring reputation as a musical revolutionary who extended the boundaries of musical design.
