I Left My Heart in San Francisco was written in 1954 by George Cory, with lyrics by Douglass Cross. The first recording was made by Tony Bennett in 1962. It achieved gold-record status, and won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and for Best Male Solo Vocal Performance.

The song has been recorded by many artists, including Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Brenda Lee, and Dean Martin. In 2001, I Left My Heart in San Francisco was ranked 23rd on the list Songs of the 20th Century, compiled jointly by the Recording Industry Association of America, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Scholastic Inc. The song was adopted by the City and County of San Francisco as an official anthem.

Tony Bennett (born in 1926) is an American singer of popular music and jazz. Bennett is also an accomplished painter, working under the name Anthony Benedetto. In the 1950s, his hits included Because of You and Rags to Riches, and his most popular albums were The Beat of My Heart and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings. In 1962, Bennett recorded his signature song, I Left My Heart in San Francisco. In the 1980s and 1990s, he had more gold-record albums, and (as of 2013) he remains a popular recording artist and concert performer. Bennett has won seventeen Grammy Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented in 2001) and two Emmy Awards; and he has been named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz-Master and a Kennedy Center Honoree. He has sold over 50 million records worldwide.
