How Deep Is The Ocean

How Deep Is the Ocean is a popular song written by Irving Berlin in 1932. In that year, hit recordings of the song were made by four different groups of artists: Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra with singer Jack Fulton, Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians with singer Carmen Lombardo, Rudy Vallee (singer) and His Connecticut Yankees, and Nat Shilkret and His Orchestra with singer Ethel Merman. The song has been covered by numerous other artists, including Benny Goodman and Peggy Lee (1941), Billie Holiday (1954), Ella Fitzgerald (1957), Frank Sinatra (1960), Barry Manilow (2010), and Eric Clapton (2010).

Irving Berlin (1888 – 1989) was an American composer and lyricist of Jewish heritage, widely considered one of the greatest American songwriters. According to George Gershwin, "His music has that vitality - both rhythmic and melodic - which never seems to lose any of its exuberant freshness; it has that rich, colorful melodic flow which is ever the wonder of all those of who, too, compose songs; his ideas are endless."
