Heart and Soul

Written by Hoagy Carmichael, with lyrics by Frank Loesser, Heart and Soul is a popular song published in 1938. The song's A-section is often simplified as a repeating I-vi-IV-V progression and taught to beginning piano students as a two-hand duet. That version became widely-known, and the progression later became common in the "doo-wop" hits of the 1950s and 1960s.

Heart and Soul has been recorded by many artists, including Larry Clinton (1939), Eddy Duchin (1939), Al Donahue (1939), The Four Aces (1952), Larry Maddox (1956), The Cleftones (1961), and Jan and Dean (1961). It has also been used in several movies and television programs.

Hoagy Carmichael (1899 – 1981) was an American composer, pianist, singer, actor, and bandleader. He is best known for writing Stardust, Georgia On My Mind, The Nearness of You, and Heart and Soul, four of the most-recorded American songs.
