Written by Cherokee Indian Obie Phillis during World War II, He's Got the Whole World in His Hands is a gospel song first popularized by Laurie London's 1958 recording, which during the 1950's was the most successful record in the United States by a British male. In 1958, Mahalia Jackson's version became the first gospel song to reach number-one on a United States pop singles chart.
