Harlem Nocturne

Written as a tribute to Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges, Harlem Nocturne is a piece composed in 1939 by Earle Hagen with lyrics by Dick Rogers. A jazz standard, it is most often played as an instrumental piece. It has been covered by many artists, and was used as the theme to Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer television series.

Earle Hagen (1919 - 2008) was an American composer who created music for movies and television. His television themes were used for programs such as Make Room For Daddy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Spy, That Girl, and The Mod Squad. He is also remembered for co-writing and whistling The Fishin' Hole, the melody of the main theme to The Andy Griffith Show. Earle Hagen was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2011.
