God Bless America

"God Bless America" is an American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin in 1918. In 1938, with the rise of Hitler, Berlin revived it as a "peace song", and it was introduced on an Armistice Day broadcast in 1938 sung by Kate Smith, on her radio show. "God Bless America" is often sung at sporting events, recitals, and other public events where national anthems are sung, sometimes in place of "The Star-Spangled Banner". Berlin donated royalties of the song to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the USA.

"I came here as an immigrant from Russia in 1893, and whatever success I have had as a songwriter I owe to this country...[later]... the song is not alone a song but an expression of my gratitude to the country that inspired it." These are words from Irving Berlin, a man whose "God Bless America," one of the top patriotic songs of all times, has frequently been proposed as a new national anthem. It was introduced by Kate Smith in 1938.
